Heavy defeat for Sassco and a major setback for Fulwell.

Mark Catcheside and Kyle Robinson.

Two major games on the night between the top two, Nissan and Fulwell, and bottom two, Sassco and Downhill. Both ended in decisive wins in the humid evening.

Nissan 2 Fulwell Buccaneers 1
The two goal setback didn’t help an increasingly agitated Fulwell team. Both Murton and Robinson were at each other more than the opponents, while Carl Middlemiss made the error of announcing his retirement before the game. Based on his performance, he already had his feet up. At the other end, Danni Lay was just asking to be sent off.

Danni Lay and action from the Nissan - Fulwell game.
The first half was mainly Fulwell. Nissan couldn’t get a grip on the game, but eventually when Nissan did score, th0ey settled. The second goal just confirmed the result. Catcheside and Calvert with the goals. But a howler from Laing let Wooton in and it was 2-1. It was too late though and Nissan secured a major result over their nearest contenders.

Downhill Impact 5 Sassco.co.uk 1
Bri Marley and friends.A disaster for Sassco. All week there had been discussions on why the leagues were losing teams. Lack of the ability to fill a form was one reason, but also lack of players was another. Sassco suffered when Tyson dropped them in it and Pearson announced he was going for a massage. The five hardy souls were confident of a decent result, until Craig Charlton turned up and Simma decided to go in goal.

Within around 25 seconds, Logan got caught cold when a shot went in off the post. The Sassco plan was in tatters and a second goal from Charlton killed them. However, Ed Morrison did grab one back and things were looking up. Unfortunately for Sassco, they conceded a third and the game was up. Eventually it was 5-1 and Charlton got all the goals – what a hero!

Redhouse Storm’s debut ends in a defeat.

Sassco.co.uk 4 Bunker UK 0.
Sassco comfortably defeated Bunker with two goals from Bell and two from Muers. The first half was 1-0 and there were opportunities for Bunker to equalise. Once the second goal went in, Sassco had plenty of chances, while Simpson made some excellent stops to make sure his team kept a clean sheet.

Roker Roar 1 Redhouse Storm 0.
A debut for the new side, Storm, in similar conditions, as the rain hurtled down. Roker Roar, who sprung to life in last weeks surprise 1-0 over Rockets, did the same this week. Storm dominated the game, but in their only chance of the first half, Roar fired in the only goal.

Redhouse Rockets 3 Seaburn Soca 2.
The best game of the night saw Rockets take the lead, but Seaburn replied and then scored what seemed to be the winner. However, with time running out and the rain not letting up, Rockets equalised and then struck soon after to take the win.

Rockets are shocked by a Roker winner.

Bunker's first win in the competition in contrast to Seaburn's three defeats.

Redhouse Fusion 7 Sassco.co.uk 2.
Sassco were brimming with confidence, having added Stevie Weavie Borat and Thomas and Teeb to the team from the ashes of the long forgotten WWC team. Another added bonus was the Muers was missing. However, Fusion dominated and struck after a few near misses. Amazingly, Sassco equalised with Garrett firing past the hapless Dinning. Eventually, Fusion’s attacking prowess easily took Sassco apart with further goals.

Roker Roar 1 Redhouse Rockets 0.
Rockets were another team brimming with hope of three points against the newcomers, Roker, who were defeated last week. The game wore on, with both sides firing blanks and both ‘keepers making saves, before a genuine roar welcomed Roker’s late goal. An unlikely result.

Bunker UK 3 Seaburn Soca 1.
Bunker cruised to a win over Seaburn. That’s three games without a win for Seaburn who have hit rock bottom. On the other side, this was the Bunker’s first win in the competition.

Downhill Impact 6 Sassco.co.uk 1.
Another disaster from Sassco as Downhill easily out ran them and took a commanding lead.

WWC 1 Redhouse Fusion 0.
A preview of the major play off next week, as WWC scored the only goal of the game to take a win, despite finishing the league on a good few points behind Fusion.

Simma’s conceded nine goals in two games.

Muers celebrates his headed goal.

A chaotic back line, with Simma seemingly forgetting how he was supposed to be a goalkeeper. Even then, it was mistakes all over the pitch.

Country Park Inn were facing a Sassco team who were a pale shadow of the side which defeated them 3-1 away. This meant that CP Inn were 2-0 up within a matter of a few minutes. Muers replied to make it 2-1 with an excellent header, but at the break, CP Inn were 3-2 ahead.

It was 4-2 after the break, but another goal from Muers; a free kick, meant it was a tight finish, but Sassco failed to capitalise and suffered another mid-week defeat.

Town End “Thunder” past a sorry Sassco.

WWC 4 Downhill Impact 0.

Downhill’s last game was the historic 1-0 victory over the Champions, but this week (after a one week break), it was back down to earth with WWC handing out a resounding thumping. Downhill performed resiliently enough, but struggled to find the back of the net.

Redhouse Fusion 8 Sassco.co.uk 0.
A weakened Sassco team faced Fusion again, this after New Tavern Predators had been suspended (albeit temporarily). The resilient performance last week was a distant memory as Fusion raced into an early lead and never looked back. Every outfield players scored. Wooton with four, both Lays with one each and Baxendale and Andrew Turner with one each.

Town End Thunder 6 Sassco.co.uk 1.
More disappointment in the second game against the revived Town End Thunder, now under the control of Marc McDermont, after Paul “Tyson” Stokoe had forced the previous version into administration. 6-1 was the final score. Neil Richardson scored two, McDermont and Tyson scored one each.

A stunning win for Impact over the Champions.

Downhill Impact 1 Redhouse Fusion 0.
A truly astonishing win for Impact. The score was 0-0 and in the dying minutes, Impact broke clear and fired in the eventual winner. A fully depleted Impact team did their Manager, Pearson, proud. His goalkeeper, replacing the increasingly unreliable Logan, pulled off some extraordinary saves. A great performance and a memorable result.

WWC 5 Sassco.co.uk 0.
A very poor Sassco team; unchanged from last week, faced a stronger WWC side who rattled five goals past Simpson. The result, combined with Fusion’s loss, puts WWC well back into the race.

Sassco.co.uk 9 New Tavern Predators 2.
The new team started well, but struggled in keeping a man in defence and suffered a heavy defeat against a rampant Sassco team.

Hylton won 4-2 on penalties.

I’m in preparation to be hauled up and bent over in front of the discipline committee, who will take turns running along the corridor to boot me up the arse.

I can actually picture the scene. In sultry Atlanta, Georgia in the USA. Craig Taylor, amongst the directors of iKobo International, sitting in their plush high-rise office boardroom thinking, “What the f**k is Muers still doing up front?”

Yes, even Sangha and Sassco are accountable. Greenwell’s accountable to me and I’m accountable to my paymasters. Luckily, the chances of iKobo executives hopping on a transatlantic flight to position a boot up my arse is unlikely to happen. Until then, the pressure remains on Greenwell despite his six-month fixed contract. He had suspected Swine Flu earlier in the week, so you know if Emu gets it, both fiddlers have been sharing spit in the showers again. Disgusting.

The Technical Committee: Greenwell, Pearson, Gourlay look intrigued by the line up while Sangha seems amused.

Stoker's header is saved by the 'keeper.

A controversial game. Maybe Sassco have grown up a bit. Greenwell’s placing his stamp on the team and pissed Si Mulvaney off by not putting him on directly at half time. I also didn’t select Campbell or the returning Langan to bolster an already bloated squad.

Murton might well have stopped the kid’s getting any presents at Christmas, as he squared up to the referee once we had let a late 1-0 lead go. Mickey Pearson scored the goal in the last fifteen minutes. Sassco were truly impressive. The squad was solid from the back, with Greenwell learning from his errors last week and playing two solid centre-half’s, Stoker and Scott Smith.

The game ended and it was penalties. Gourlay and Stoker scored, but Pearson, Muers and Macca missed.

Can’t damn the performance. It was excellent. The pressure seems to be ebbing away from Greenwell, despite the abuse given to him in the last few weeks (mainly from me). Less said about the Murton incident the better. We’ll have to take anything we get hit with on the chin.

It was good to see Greenwell taking full control of the coaching side of things. I’ll still handle the squad and the logistics, but he does the team line ups, the subs and everything to do with football. I’m a bit distracted these days. Even ran through a red light at Heworth.

Josh Lay scores a brilliant single goal to outshine Kurt Baxendale’s double hat-trick.

WWC 3 Sassco.co.uk 1
Stevie “Borat” Anderson fired in an accurate shot through Wayne Greenwell’s gangly legs to put WWC 1-0 ahead. They looked comfortable until just before half time, when aging romeo, Marc McDermont outpaced an equally aged romeo, Kyle Robinson to equalise from a long throw from David Simpson. Second half saw normal service resume with two accurate strikes from WWC to take them to a 3-1 lead. Philly Werz, big spending owner of WWC quoted the previous week that he’d splash the cash for Bell’s team. “Let that be a lesson to everyone; depth in the squad when you can call on the likes of Teeb and Walker.”

Town End Thunder 3 Downhill Impact 1
The Thundercats overturned a 1-0 deficit, scored by Kev Snowdon, to run out as 3-1 winners. They presented a reasonably strong squad which seemed to gel together without the internal strife caused by Liam Richardson. Jonesy continued his fine form of missing around five chances before grabbing one on target. He scored the final one in a 3-1 win. Mickey Pearson was unavailable for this one due to injury, but strong criticism goes into Chris Taylor and Kev McCluskey for having other priorities. “Eastenders is getting better,” said the excitable Taylor. “Sam Mitchell is compelling in an ugly sort of way.”

Redhouse Fusion 8 Hendon Rovers 1
“UR a ryt arsehole. Wait til we play sassco” and “Ur write ups are shit” were genuine quotes from Josh Lay in the previous week as his overrated hat-trick was barely given a mention. This week, I have decided to rectify matters and can claim that his single goal against a new Hendon Rovers team, far outshone Kurt Baxendale’s staggering six (yes, six) goals. Josh Lay glided along the pitch with his bright orange boots and afterwards claimed that the teams in this league are vanishing slowly – scared off by Redhouse Fusion (if that is a real name). He singled out WWC and Tommy Bell’s management choices. He also complained about the fitness of referee, Anth Mouat. Back to the action: Woody scored the other goal in a mammoth 8-1 win over Graham Moffat’s new team who are statistically the oldest side in the competition.

Wear Consulting 3 IPS 0 – match awarded

Poor defending, but dirtier drop-outs.

Dirty drop-outs were Macca and Titch. Anth Langan didn’t reply to any texts during the week, so I assumed he would not be there. We drafted in Anthony Pearson, Dan Campbell and Wayne Ramsay. David Murton also made his bi-weekly appearance. Bad news is that Mickey Pearson is injured for a while. Marky was at work, while Scott Smith was also the same. No reply from Tim. Titch sent me a text this morning asking if I’d received his text last night. Well, no, because he didn’t send one. Macca waffled on about being in hospital, or something like that.

Mickey Pearson hobbling across the pitch with a bag full of Kronenburg.

Needless to say, very angry. Not a great start for Greenwell to start his coaching role with Sassco. Despite this, he was reasonably positive after the game with his comments (we’ll put an end to that soon).

Wayne Greenwell’s comments: “Today was the first of many steps in the new Sassco outfit. The effort was there clearly but the mistakes were ever present in our third of the pitch. So next week there will be changes to the back four with the introduction of a new centre half. The midfield was a steady 6 out of 10 today. An excellent performance by Muers up front earned him two goals and they were excellently taken for a man of his size and ability. Simma also had a good game despite conceding six, he was more vocal than ever before and I could even hear him over Dov’s abuse towards Muers (justly deserved at times).

“So to summarise the match: The first half went as well as could be expected; battling against gale force winds. The team as a unit performed well, putting us in a good position to push on in the second half. But as we started the second forty five complacency set in and cracks appeared in the back four. Ball watching and poor man marking gave away cheap sloppy goals. But less said about today and lets push on and look ahead to the next game and I know we will perform better, thanks for the effort today lads.”
