Please note that these apply to only 5-a-side tournaments.

TEAM WEAR (IMPORTANT)

Identical shirts must be worn by your Team (apart from goalkeeper). Shorts colour must match each other players’ on your team. The same with socks.

For example, if your team has white shorts and red socks, then all your team should wear the same. We film and photograph the event and always make it look professional. It would be helpful if members of your own side-lines could take some photos as well and send in.

BARRIER HEIGHT

The enclosed pitch has a barrier around all four sides.

If the ball is kicked or tackled above barrier height (example in the photo), then a free-kick is awarded.

Note that the goalkeeper can save the ball and allow it to go higher than the barrier. The same applies if the ball hits a crossbar or post.

TACKLES AND SHIN PADS

Sliding tackles are not allowed. There is no strict caution for this but all dangerous tackles will be penalised.

All Players must wear shin pads. The referee may prevent a Player from playing if he does not comply. This is for Player safety.

FREE-KICKS

Free-kicks will be awarded for various infringements.

These can be direct or in-direct based on the referee’s decision. Please note that penalties may be awarded if there is a clear denial of a goal-scoring opportunity.

BACK PASSES TO THE GOALKEEPER

You can’t pass directly back to the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper can pass the ball out to player 1, who must pass to player 2, before player 2 can pass back to the goalkeeper.

CAUTIONS AND SIN BIN

Red card sending off will apply in the same way as in an 11-Player game and a “SIN BIN” can be operated. Teams must not argue with the referees.

SUBSTITUTES – ROLL ON AND OFF

The number of substitutions made during a game is unlimited. A player who has been replaced may return to the pitch as a substitute for another player.

Substitutions should take place when there is a break in play or during play.

DRAWN GAMES IN KNOCK-OUT STAGES

The penalty spot at the venue is the dot within the semi-circle.

Penalties will be taken, but these are sudden death immediately and are on one-step only.

Coin toss to decide who chooses first team to kick.

An update on the Sassco Basketball team.

Report by Alan Hoyle:

The team is doing fantastic. We lost our season opener, but have won our last 3 games, so we are doing pretty well right now.

Our last game was a 51 – 50 win against Sunderland University at Sunderland. We hadn’t played a game in 2 months and didn’t have a training session in 4 weeks due to the weather. We quickly fell behind 11 – 0 early in the first quarter but managed to end the quarter ahead 18 – 13. The second and third quarters were pretty close with the score getting tied 8 times.

The fourth quarter started with a run by Sunderland and our power forward being fouled out, whilst our centre was in foul trouble, it ended up with us being down by 9 points with 6 mins remaining.

We got ourselves back into the game on defence and drawing fouls which got us to the free throw line, with 28 seconds left we went ahead, 49 – 47. Sunderland called a time out and had the inbound. Sunderland used the shot clock and scored a 3 pointer with 5 seconds left in the game to go ahead 50 – 49.

We called a time out and drew up a play. We went out there and Darren May scored the game winner with 2.8 seconds left on a mid ranger fadeaway jumpshot over 3 defenders. Sunderland inbounded the ball but their last second shot attempt was blocked which give us the win and our 3 wins and 1 lose record, which puts us in fantastic shape to finish the season in a top 3 place.

Simma’s conceded nine goals in two games.

Muers celebrates his headed goal.

A chaotic back line, with Simma seemingly forgetting how he was supposed to be a goalkeeper. Even then, it was mistakes all over the pitch.

Country Park Inn were facing a Sassco team who were a pale shadow of the side which defeated them 3-1 away. This meant that CP Inn were 2-0 up within a matter of a few minutes. Muers replied to make it 2-1 with an excellent header, but at the break, CP Inn were 3-2 ahead.

It was 4-2 after the break, but another goal from Muers; a free kick, meant it was a tight finish, but Sassco failed to capitalise and suffered another mid-week defeat.

Titch: The Miracle Midget.

The Miracle Midget is sent tumbling as he was a marked man after his hat-trick.

The already bolstered missing list got even worse. Dave Smith was added to the list to those missing on Monday, and I expected this to be the first time we would present ten players.

However, resourcefulness and persuasion led to a total of twelve (including me) against the Times Inn. Stephen “Titch” Conlin’s last game for Sassco was back on the 5th September and he re-introduced himself to a crumbling squad with an emphatic hat-trick and performance.

A scramble in the Times Inn box. Anth Pearson leaps and grabs the winner.

Times Inn went 1-0 ahead after we had the better chances. The ex-Sassco trio of Mickey Donkin, Kevin and Paul McCluskey were more than pleased on taking the lead for their own team. After some dallying on the ball, Times Inn snatched it and their player hammered the ball into the roof of the net. But Sassco were soon back into it. A palmed save from McCluskey saw Titch easily nod the ball into the back of the net.

Mickey Pearson and Scott Smith. It's Titch! But this time Kev McCluskey doesn't flap and palms the chance away.

Second half saw Times Inn score from a poor offside decision from our back line. Instructions were clear that we go goal side, but Scott Smith, making his first return from injury, seemed to be in his own little world. Ironically, late on, he defended deep and Sassco looked comfortable. At this time, Sassco conceded and it was 2-1. Just when we thought it was going to be 2-2, Times Inn took a 3-1 lead, but Titch nodded another header in from a Scott Smith free-kick almost from kick off.

Finally, with around ten minutes remaining, the indomitable Titch rifled in a tight angle shot to make it 3-3. Another glorious chance was missed, but the resulting corner saw Anth Pearson’s face slap the ball into the back of the net.

A haphazard (some might say ‘shite’) performance from Sassco, but we cobbled together a team and managed to gain a result against a stronger Times Inn side than we faced on Wednesday a couple of weeks ago.

The good news is that the injuries seem to be clearing up and our ‘stand by’ players seem to be slotting in without any problems.

Stoker busts Macca’s lip.

Dave and Scott Smith, plus Campbell were missing from this expected win. It didn’t start too well. We weren’t under any real threat, but the early goal didn’t come. The wind at Thompson Park didn’t help much, but we did open the scoring when Langan’s powerful shot forced it’s way in. After this, the team relaxed and the eventual second goal came from Scott Hembrough.

Mickey Oliver, Dave Gourlay and Scott Hembrough celebrating a goal.

Hembrough, Gourlay and Anth Pearson.

A bit of a half-time rollocking from Mickey Pearson (probably didn’t get his leg over the night before) resulted in a much better second half. This time, Scott Hembrough scored again. Finally, Dave Gourlay scored from a free-kick in a comprehensive win.

Gourlay's free-kick nestles into the back of the net.

An interested back line full of retards to end the game (due to substitutions), with McDermont, Stoker, Muers and Sangha holding back the hoards of Cove players.

Langan despairs after a first-half miss.

Back in the changing rooms, Stoker and Macca had an argument which led to Stoker giving Mac a dig and resulting in a bust lip. It’s all good.

Please note that these apply to all small sided games organised by Sassco. This includes 5, 6, 7 and above -a-side.

TEAM WEAR (IMPORTANT)

  • Identical shirts must be worn by your Team (apart from goalkeeper)
  • Shorts colour must match each other players' on your team. The same with socks.
  • For example, if your team has white shorts and red socks, then all your team should wear the same. We film and photograph the event and always make it look professional. It would be helpful if members of your own side-lines could take some photos as well and send in.

GOALKEEPER AREA

  • The goalkeeper is NOT allowed outside his own marked area (a semi-circle or square box) and outfield Players are not allowed in. If an outfield Player enters the opposition’s area then a goalkeeper’s throw out is given.
  • If any outfield Player enters his own area then a penalty is given. If the Player was pushed in the area then a penalty does not apply. It is the referees’ own interpretation if he wishes to give a penalty when a Player accidentally enters his own area. If the Player is clearing a ball then a penalty will apply. If the goalkeeper steps outside the area or his momentum takes him out of the area when he is making a save then a penalty will apply, unless the referee interprets it as an accident.

BACK PASSES ARE BANNED

  • Deliberate back passes are not allowed - even headers. If a Player deliberately passes back to the goalkeeper then a free kick is awarded from the position of where the Player passed back to the goalkeeper. The referee can allow each team a "free pass" in that there will be no foul given, but the rule will be explained.

PENALTIES

  • Penalties are taken 1 metre from the edge of the box. There are no markings, so the referee can make judgement. One step is allowed.

FREE KICKS

  • Free kicks are all direct and can be taken quickly unless the referee specifies.
  • Distance from a wall (if the kicker is not taking quickly) is 2.5 metres (approx. 3 yards)
  • Free kicks for fouls near the goal area are taken approx. 2.5 metres (3 yards) from the goal area (this allows the defending Team to make a wall).

CORNER KICKS, THROW INS AND CENTRE BALLS

  • As well as from direct free kicks, goals can be scored direct from corner kicks and any other dead ball situation - even throw-ins

TACKLES AND SHIN PADS

  • Sliding tackles are not allowed. There is no strict caution for this but all dangerous tackles will be penalised.
  • All Players must wear shin pads. The referee may prevent a Player from playing if he does not comply. This is for Player safety.

CAUTIONS AND SIN BIN

  • Red card sending off will apply in the same way as in an 11-Player game and a "SIN BIN" can be operated. Teams must not argue with the referees.

ROLL ON ROLL OFF SUBS

  • Unlimited roll on and off substitutes are allowed - referee must be informed of any changes.

DRAWN GAMES IN KNOCK OUT STAGES

  • Penalties will be taken, but these are sudden death immediately.
  • Coin toss to decide who chooses first team to kick.
  • As no marking are on the lines, the spot will be approx. half a metre from the edge of the goal box.

PITCH AREAS

The pitch used is essentially a quarter of a full size pitch. The Downhill Hub pitch have blue markings for the surrounding pitch. The goal area is a bit more complicated. The goal area is separated by a yellow line and the closes area to the edge has two white lines available. The part closer to the middle of an 11-a-side pitch doesn't. This means the goal area is marked out as shown below.

The black dotted line shows the goal area to be used. As you can see the left side goal is marked out without the need of marking, becuase the yellow line intersects with two white lines, therefore making a natural goal area. The other side (closest to the half way line on the 11-a-side pitch) needs the small goal lines marked out, therefore we use rubber stripes to show this, with markings to show the goal edge, intersecting with the yellow line.

GOAL AREA MARKERS

Unfortunately, the pitch markings are too small or large for 6-a-side, so we have had to modify the goal area to show the edges. This is in the form of an L shaped rubber piece, which is layed on the corner edges. Not the best situation, but the best solution.
