Roker Roar suffer a heavy defeat.

Downhill Impact 4 Roker Roar 0.
Despite having Rikki Kennedy, who showed his age and lack of fitness with a poor performance, Downhill were lucky to have Jimmy Raeper aboard, and he destroyed the Roar, with a superb second half performance. Roker Roar had limited Downhill to a single goal, carrying on their stubborn performances from the last two games (both wins), but a penalty given away saw them collapse.

Seaburn Soca 2 Redhouse Storm 1.
Just as Brook Dickens was heading for the chop; the first managerial casualty of the season, a missed penalty and then an excellent long range effort saw his team take the lead against the Redhouse Storm. Eventually, after a tough battle, they managed to take their first three points.

Thanks to Dan Campbell for refereeing this game.

Sassco.co.uk 3 Redhouse Rockets 1.
Sassco, wearing an uncomfortable Umbro made England top, made an uncomfortable start as they were swamped by the Rockets – who were coming into the came on the back of a win against their fierce rivals, Seaburn Soca. Struggling to find their feet, Sassco managed to score an equaliser against the run of play and eventually struck a second goal in the second half. Breathing space was achieved when Stevie Weavie Borat hammered home the third and decisive goal.

Thanks to Brian Marley for refereeing this game.

Stubba assists with two!

Dust is flying as Stubba fails to convert one of his many scrappy chances.

I take the blame for todays defeat. Why? Well, not for the on the pitch theatrics, but because I spent a couple of seasons trying to get Washington CC to join the WCFL. They’re actually doing very well. Unbeaten and at the top of the league.

We were on a hiding to nothing. We were missing Murton, Pearson(s), Macca, Tim and rising star, Mark Muers. We managed to rope Dave Smith and Scott Smith in. Stubba also showed up and Titch made a return after missing two games. Dixon and Marky were also there.

More dust as Dave Gourlay puts away the penalty after Stubba had been fouled.

Comedy moment. This normally happens to Sassco, but this time, the Washington defender collides with his own goalkeeper.

First half was reasonable. We conceded early, but then had around three chances which were poorly executed. They then scored their second excellent goal.

Second half was hit and miss. Wayne Greenwell and Anth Langan took over tactical duties and will be doing so from now on. I’ve said plenty of times that pulling the squad together and getting them there, plus arranging kit, etc. means that the tactical side of things really isn’t worked on. Both players want the role, so it should be interesting what ideas they come up with.

Dixon's return to full time football with Sassco isn't going to plan. It seems as if early retirement is on the cards.

We conceded a third and fourth in quick succession. By now we were jaded. After the fifth, Titch got one on his tally with an assist from Stubba. Stubba then got walloped and Gourlay put away the penalty. Our only highlight of the second half was the excellent and battling performance from Scott Smith in defence.

The final score was 6-2. Poor and disappointing, but half expected with such a threadbare squad.

An astonishing comeback from Sassco sees a penalty triumph.

Sassco won 2-0 on penalties.
Nothing short of a staggering comeback from a depleted Sassco team. Missing were Kyle Robinson and the iconic David Simpson. In stepped myself (Sangha) in goal, unwisely boasting of some of my cat like reflexes in the recent tournament win for Azure. On the other hand, Josh Lay was truly confident they’d gain the Double. After all, AA had walloped Sassco 9-0 only a few weeks ago.

The game kicked off with AA having the majority of the chances. They drew first blood when Josh Lay was unmarked and struck from distance. Mistakes were being made by Sassco all the time and the cumbersome Mark Muers was waddling around like a harpooned whale. It didn’t look good for Sassco. It was even worse when Wooton, who had announced that he wasn’t signing for Sassco after all, despite filling out the dreaded form, hammered what seemed to be the nail in the coffin.

But then it was the comeback. A long punt from myself saw Emu crash past a few players and nobble the ball into the back of the net. AA then had a goal disallowed, which was fortunate for Sassco, but did demonstrate the chances they had. Second half saw Sassco clog up and not concede any more ground. The chances for AA dried up. Both Danni Lay and Josh Lay had a sibling argument. I’ve since heard they got no tea and then started arguing over who’s sitting on the higher naughty step.

The winners. Back rows shows David Raeper, Mark Muers and Davinder Sangha. Front shows Titch Conlon, Paul Stokoe (with the trophy) and Neil Richardson.

With around five minutes remaining, the most amazing thing happened. Emu strode up and unleashed a thirty yard pile driver past a despairing Laing. For all the hype and the mystique surrounding AA, they had let their lead slip and Sassco hung on.

The final whistle went and I gave the celebration cheer. Josh Lay exclaimed, “Look at the f**kers. Celebrating a f**king draw. What a pile of sh**te…” And believe me, those are actual quotes.

Penalty kicks. Sangha was boisterous, while AA were quiet. It looked like they were intimidated. Jimmy Rasper scored first, and then Sangha easily saved Podge’s tame effort. Nelly calmly slotted his and then it was Josh Lay v Sangha. Only one winner. The legs did their job and the ball cannoned back out. A 2-0 penalty win for Sassco, who actually have a strong recent record in this Cup. They won it (again on penalties) against Sporting in Season 11, but suffered a heavy defeat in the Season 12 competition (where they despatched AA on penalties in the Semi Final). And now this season the glass trophy is being melted down for sand in Tyson’s house.

It’s AA v IPS and Sassco v Hendon in the Semi Finals.

Gary Tyzack (number 10, watched by Lay and Lay in change shirts) fires in a penalty which is saved by Laing.

The final set of games to decide the semi final placings took place tonight in searing heat. AA gained the two wins as expected, but both were narrow ones, while Wear’s brave performance in two games failed to get them the three points needed. Thanks also to Ken Street for coming in to referee at short notice in Anth Mouat’s absence. Also, thanks to Tommy Bell for offering as well.

AA Fabrications 1 IPS 0
A superb defensive performance from IPS. AA had most of the play, but IPS repelled everything. Lainey had a few minor shots at him, but at the other end, IPS broke down for seconds and Kurt Baxendale fired in the winner. Despite the defeat, IPS could be proud of themselves by tailoring their game to their esteemed opponents and nearly getting away with a crucial point.

AA Fabrications 3 Wear Consulting 2
By now, AA were suffering. Injury forced Wooton out of the game, while Kurt also suffered. Even with the slower pace, AA took the lead, then Tyzack rammed the worst penalty ever seen in 6-a-side straight at Lainey. It only got worse when AA added the second goal (Moon scoring both so far). However, the fightback took place when Wear Consulting scored two quick goals – the first conceded by AA in this cup competition. The players also heated up with Tyzack being grabbed by Charlie (who’d come on as a substitute) and Josh Lay giving Tyzack “the poorest patter he’d heard.” Lay managed to have the last laugh with the winner.

Wear Consulting 1 Sassco.co.uk 1
It was make or break for Wear. A single win would take them above IPS. Sassco were shocked by the absence of talisman Murton, but quickly managed to rope Steve Conlin in for an appearance in the red Kappa shirt which looked way to big for him. Wear Consulting took the first step to the Semi Final when Tyack easily drove past Sangha for the opener. Up until then, Sassco had missed plenty of opportunities. However, the second half saw a long throw from Simpson land at Tyson’s feet and he made it 1-1. Both teams had good chances in the second half and Wear came heartbreakingly close to a second, but failed and sent IPS through to the Semi Finals, where they face AA again. Sassco have Hendon to overcome.
