At Washington Leisure Centre

We’re back at Washington for the tournament on the 18th June, due to having a busy schedule in April and May.

The previous entrants have all confirmed re-entry: Kurdish FC, Sassco.co.uk, Castle Park and South Shields FC.

If any additional teams are interested, then we will look at an extra pitch. Contact using WhatsApp or message via the website. The entrance cost is £30 and will be paid in advance at the end of May. We always pay the pitch and referee in advance, so it’s just turn up and play on the day

Kurdish FC won the last tournament, with a strong showing and decisive win over Castle Park. The previous tournament result and footage are below.

Three wins out of three.

A strong line up saw three outstanding teams, while the previous winners were rock bottom.

Sassco opened with a heavy defeat v South Shields in the opener. It was 7-1 and it was clear Sassco were in no shape to achieve anything in the subsequent games, considering they’d brought Marc McDermont back out of his fourth retirement (wishing he’d never replied to the text).

A fiery encounter between Castle Park FC and Kurdish FC ended in a narrow win for the latter – Castle Park being 4-2 up at one stage. Tash Harper was in prime voice, and it nearly boiled over afterwards, but was calmed by the referee, Kieran Smith.

Castle Park, still smarting from the defeat easily overcame Sassco, before Kurdish FC, being in pole position, defeated South Shields 6-4. The title was then confirmed when Kurdish FC easily beat Sassco 7-1, in a well deserved win and, for Sassco, a demonstration of the worst defence of a title since Leicester in the Premier League.

The final game between Castle Park and South Shields was academic for the top spot, but ended 6-2 in favour of Castle Park in a keenly contested tournament, which saw Castle Park second, and South Shields third, with Sassco rock bottom.

Two wins and then clawing back a 4-4 draw.

Four teams took part in the final tournament this year. All looked strong, with Washington Boys and Sassco returning from the October event, while Velocity Colliery Tavern and WHN FC brought strong squads.

The opening saw the incumbent Fruit Bowl holders suffer a heavy defeat, with newcomers WHN FC hammering them 5-1. Sassco were next on, clinical in a 3-1 win over Velocity, who had their fair share of chances.

Sassco then surprisingly came back from 1-0 down to defeat the form team, WHN 2-1, which put them in pole position. After this, Washington Boys then overcame Velocity 3-2 to gain their first points. Velocity ended their campaign with a defeat against WHN, despite going ahead and then equalising. All their defeats were narrow, but at this stage, the other three team all had the opportunity to take the title.

The final game saw Washington Boys needing an unlikely handsome win to take the tournament, with WHN waiting on the sidelines hoping for any win for Washington over Sassco to give them the trophy. Sassco just needed to avoid defeat – however they tried their hardest to give WHN the trophy.

They were 2-0 down, but then clawed back with two quick goals. Washington then went 3-2 ahead, only to see Sassco reply from the kick off. Finally, Washington had a man dismissed and staggeringly went ahead in the last 90 seconds. They didn’t hold on (unfortunately for WHN) as the Washington goalmouth was bombarded before Leo Whelam slid a low shot past Arjan Sangha.

A great overall win for Sassco.co.uk, their first tournament win since December 2020, with a squad of Mahdi Pirot, who fired in most of their goals, with Ciaran Howe-Hartley, Leo and Paul Whelam, Declan Boiston and Davinder Sangha in the squad.

All the teams were very accomplished and could easily have won the trophy in probably the most balanced tournament to date.

Season 26’s first tournament is on 13th February 2024

Existing teams will be invited and any newcomers or previous entrants.

Strong showing from the Washington Boys.

A great tournament at Washington Leisure Centre. We did have 8 teams ready, but unfortunately, Whitburn’s two teams dropped out late. This meant remaining were pooled into a single league and performed over two pitches. Every team played their part and helped out with the organisation, as there was a lot of switching between pitches. Both referees, Kiel (making a debut after having the Grangetown team in a couple of tournaments) and Kieran, from the August tournament – did an excellent job.

Washington Boys triumphed in the end, despite being held 1-1 by a strong Troo team in their opening game. Troo were hampered by a player suffering an injury early on. Current winners, Washington Deaf, eventually finished second, with a set of wins, apart from setbacks against Washington Boys and then Sassco (despite leading 2-0). Washington Deaf, Troo and Sassco were relatively matched, and Sassco were coasting to a show down with Washington Boys, but were beaten by the new entrants, ISF Hadrian FC, who had a large squad available to them and an excellent goalkeeper.

Duck United FC, surprisingly, propped up the table, despite a set of narrow defeats v Troo and Sassco and a draw against ISF.

In the event, Washington Boys deserved their triumph in an excellent tournament. Footage will be added soon.

Washington Deaf FC win the first tournament back at Washington Galleries.

It was a struggle to get teams in, but luckily, we managed to get four sides out, with Washington Deaf triumphant after two large victories. Sassco paced them until the end and were only a few goals away from a possible tournament win. However, Washington's 10-1 and 8-0 wins over Washington Athletic and Impact meant they took the title.

The opening game saw a surprise win for Washington Athletic over Impact. The latter were a put together team, but Washington Athletic were mainly veterans. However, Michael Walker's intensive PowerPoint tactics bore fruit as Athletic came from behind to take a 3-2 victory.

The second game saw the eventual winners and runners-up play out an entertaining 3-3 draw. Washington Deaf took the lead and Sassco.co.uk fought hard to get the equaliser...only to concede two more in succession. Sassco.co.uk then clawed one back before the eventual equaliser.

Sassco then defeated Impact heavily, before Washington Deaf did the same to Athletic. Washington Deaf then piled goals past Impact. The last game saw Sassco power ahead, after conceding, to score 8 past Washington Athletic, but it was too little and not enough time meaning Washington Deaf FC deservedly raised the fruit bowl for the first time since participation.

All six games are shown below.

Please note that this is not an officially organised tournament in that all teams pay per participant, and any insurance needs to be added by individual players if they wish to be covered, in a similar manner if they were playing 5-a-side with friends.

The venue we use is the Washington Leisure Centre, run by Everyone Active, based on the other side of Asda in the centre of Washington Galleries.

This brand-new centre was opened in 2015 after an £11m investment and it has everything you’ll need to stay active. It includes a state-of-the-art 63-station gym, as well as a 25m swimming pool that, along with its two flumes, also plays host to our award-winning swimming lessons, among other aquatic activities. They also boast a full group fitness programme, a sports hall that plays host to a number of activities – including five-a-side football and badminton – as well as two squash courts. Kids can enjoy our soft play area too, while adults can relax in our health suite after their workout.

The brand-new football facilities consist of six five-a-side pitches. These pitches play host to multiple leagues held throughout the week, while activities and services such as walking football, parties and child coaching and private hire are all available too.

Access is easy and the onsite car park should be have spaces. However, if not, then it’s recommended to park in front of the ASDA section and walk along the ramp.

Heated tournament, but Carpet Centres Elite resilient.

In the strongest line up of teams to date, Carpets took the tournament with two wins and a draw, over incumbent, Wearmouth CW.

Carpet's opened with a strong 2-1 win over Heppies, before Sassco had a heated match v Wearmouth CW. The less said, the better as these tournaments are designed to be relaxing events, rather than aggressive tournaments.

Sassco then came alive with a 2-0 win over Heppies, before the two strongest teams, Wearmouth and Carpets settled for a 1-1 draw. The tournament then opened up for both Sassco and Carpets, when Heppies sprung a surprise 2-1 win over Wearmouth. This meant the last game was the decider. Sassco needed a win and Carpets just needed a draw. It was academic after the opening salvo, as Carpets led 2-0, despite two strong opportunities for Sassco.

Carpets took the title, deservedly in a chaotic tournament. It seems the pitch markings aren't going to get better any time soon, so it's likely we'll take the next tournament back to Washington Galleries, where it's an enclosed pitch and 5-a-side.

Still with 8 teams for the 1st of November, but Sky Lounge didn't make this one, so it's opened up for a strong Wearmouth CW team to take the Fruit Bowl for Christmas.

The big change was exceptionally strong teams from Museum Vaults and Athletic Sports United. Both Steve Jackson and Simon Bell opened up their PayPal accounts and added substances to the water, resulting in two rampant teams, both making the Semi Finals and Museum Vaults securing the final spot after the longest penalty shootout since the  2005 Namibian Cup.

Disappointing were Sassco.co.uk, Sporting Redhouse, Boldon CA and Newcastle City FC. Sassco were rock bottom with three defeats, while Sporting expected high hopes after their opener over Sassco, only to draw and then lose to Carpet Centres Elite, who themselves overcame an opening defeat to ASU to second the group.

Newcastle City and Boldon CA both played out a draw, which was probably the best it got. Newcastle were hammered by Museum 5-0, while Boldon secured another draw and a solitary goal defeat v eventual winners, Wearmouth CW.

The final ended a little sour, with Wearmouth CW leading Museum 2-0, and a little failed showboating led the Museum team to leave early. Wearmouth were worthy winners in the absence of Sky Lounge. The next tournament is likely scheduled for February 2023.
