Please note that these apply to only 5-a-side tournaments.

TEAM WEAR (IMPORTANT)

Identical shirts must be worn by your Team (apart from goalkeeper). Shorts colour must match each other players’ on your team. The same with socks.

For example, if your team has white shorts and red socks, then all your team should wear the same. We film and photograph the event and always make it look professional. It would be helpful if members of your own side-lines could take some photos as well and send in.

BARRIER HEIGHT

The enclosed pitch has a barrier around all four sides.

If the ball is kicked or tackled above barrier height (example in the photo), then a free-kick is awarded.

Note that the goalkeeper can save the ball and allow it to go higher than the barrier. The same applies if the ball hits a crossbar or post.

TACKLES AND SHIN PADS

Sliding tackles are not allowed. There is no strict caution for this but all dangerous tackles will be penalised.

All Players must wear shin pads. The referee may prevent a Player from playing if he does not comply. This is for Player safety.

FREE-KICKS

Free-kicks will be awarded for various infringements.

These can be direct or in-direct based on the referee’s decision. Please note that penalties may be awarded if there is a clear denial of a goal-scoring opportunity.

BACK PASSES TO THE GOALKEEPER

You can’t pass directly back to the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper can pass the ball out to player 1, who must pass to player 2, before player 2 can pass back to the goalkeeper.

CAUTIONS AND SIN BIN

Red card sending off will apply in the same way as in an 11-Player game and a “SIN BIN” can be operated. Teams must not argue with the referees.

SUBSTITUTES – ROLL ON AND OFF

The number of substitutions made during a game is unlimited. A player who has been replaced may return to the pitch as a substitute for another player.

Substitutions should take place when there is a break in play or during play.

DRAWN GAMES IN KNOCK-OUT STAGES

The penalty spot at the venue is the dot within the semi-circle.

Penalties will be taken, but these are sudden death immediately and are on one-step only.

Coin toss to decide who chooses first team to kick.

Redhouse Fusion 5 Sassco.co.uk 4.

A depleted Fusion team, without Quinn, Lay or Wooton, took on a strong Sassco team, so it was quite even. Fusion took the lead, but Sassco, spearheaded by Gary Tyzack, soon equalised with Kevin McCluskey picking the ball out of the Fusion net. Eventually the game opened up and despite a number of saves in the opening from Sangha, it was balanced out. Sassco took the lead at 4-3 and Tyzack had a glorious chance to make it 5-3, but Fusion, despite being short of their regulars, took their chances. The Sassco team featured Mark Muers, Keith Mouat, Stephen Lewis and also Tyzack, who scored a hat-trick.

No idea who was in the Fusion team; a bunch of youngsters along with the aging Kevin McCluskey, still pulling off those saves.

Team Coulson 3 Redhouse FC 0 – match awarded.

Lo and behold, the Teeb sent a message saying “Tosh was sorting it…” which meant a no-show. Even their opponents, Team Coulson were so overconfident that their star man, Michael Ross even dropped out and assured the rest of his team that a win was in the bag.

Approximately 1525 days, 22 hours, 28 minutes and 26 seconds, or 4 years, 2 months, 5 days since Season 16 ended (back in 2011), Season 17 kicked off in similar fashion. Sassco struggling for players, the referee not turning up, balls going missing beforehand and Muers missing his fair share of chances.

Team Coulson 5 Sassco.co.uk 2.

The opening encounter saw Team Coulson (minus the Coulson) find a suitable replacement in goal in Steve Logan. However, the outfield group of players read like a who’s who of the giants of Sassco football; Gary Davison, Mark Kelsey, John Hunt, Stephen Wilson and Michael Ross. All ably marshalled by David “Alfie” Leithes, who did his part by taking photos.

Sassco, their opponents, struggled. Drop outs led to two late replacements to accompany Muers, Sangha, Simpson and McConville, but Team Coulson pulverised them in a pulsating first half.  The famous strike partnership of Hunt and Wilson grabbed two each, while Michael Ross scored the other, a superb header from a centre by Wilson. 5-0 at half-time, and with Coulson’s foot off the pedal, Sassco came back, but could only manage two goals, with Muers grabbing one of them.

Thanks to Tommy Bell for stepping in and refereeing this game.

Redhouse Fusion 7 Redhouse FC 0.

For the following game, Redhouse Fusion returned, albeit larger and pumped up on steroids, so much that even the oversized Fruit of the Loom t-shirt bibs got a hammering, especially off Josh Lay, who returned with the core of the side containing Liam Wooton, Gavin Quinn and Rikki Kennedy. The t-shirts gave away plenty of arm tattoos, which I think most were too young to legally have the last time they played.

Thomas Bell, sprawled on the floor, while Wooton calmly jogs back after scoring. Photo taken by Arjan Sangha.

Their opponents were a “dream team” formed by Steve “Teeb” Farrer and Tommy Bell, which was made up from their 11-a-side teams. Yet, it was Fusion who sprang into life and like the game before, this was one sided. Plenty of quick passing on a pitch which was cramped, due to both teams playing 7-a-side, saw Fusion, not containing their star from four years ago, Danni Lay, spread the goals around the team. Josh Lay scored 2, Wooton scored 2, Liam Lay 2 and Jack Wright scored 1. The result puts Fusion at the top of the table and strong favourites to win the competition – as expected.

A decent start to the return of the league. Touch wood, but despite having the likes of Kelsey, Muers and Hunt on the pitch, not once did the ball fly over the fence in two games.

AA hit Hendon for eight and Hylton Castle fail to show.

It's all red faces, puffed cheeks and general unhealthiness as Kevin Cooper races after an IPS player.

A demoralising start to the evening occured when Hylton failed to present a team. This means that they have been removed from the league until the fine for a cancellation on the day is paid. Considering that they had only played one game meant that their result was deleted from the group and now only five teams remain in the competition – the lowest to date.

IPS 1 Wear Consulting 0
Both were closely matched teams and the score reflects that. It was only a scuffed shot from Glen Cue which ended the game in favour of IPS – their first win in the competition. The match flared up when Tyzack put in one of his many famous challenges, but that was in response to the “snap him” cries from the IPS team. It ended with hand shakes after the game. Tyzack requested that the website convey his apologies to the IPS team as some of his challenges were late and high. Very similar to the time him and Macca had a bitch fight at the back end of last season.

Josh Lay fires in a shot before Lee Ramsay can close in.

AA Fabrications 8 Hendon Rovers 0
Hendon, after their two remarkable wins last week, came crashing back down to earth when a weakened side was dismantled by AA. Josh Lay scored four goals, while Mark Moon scored two. Kurt Baxendale and Liam Wooton scored the others, but Danni Lay (not for the first time) was firing blanks again. The win settles AA firmly at the top of the table. Now it’s a battle for all teams to avoid fourth place to avoid a match up in the Semi Finals.

There are strong rumours that the Hendon 'keeper is ready to quit.

Please note that these apply to all small sided games organised by Sassco. This includes 5, 6, 7 and above -a-side.

TEAM WEAR (IMPORTANT)

  • Identical shirts must be worn by your Team (apart from goalkeeper)
  • Shorts colour must match each other players' on your team. The same with socks.
  • For example, if your team has white shorts and red socks, then all your team should wear the same. We film and photograph the event and always make it look professional. It would be helpful if members of your own side-lines could take some photos as well and send in.

GOALKEEPER AREA

  • The goalkeeper is NOT allowed outside his own marked area (a semi-circle or square box) and outfield Players are not allowed in. If an outfield Player enters the opposition’s area then a goalkeeper’s throw out is given.
  • If any outfield Player enters his own area then a penalty is given. If the Player was pushed in the area then a penalty does not apply. It is the referees’ own interpretation if he wishes to give a penalty when a Player accidentally enters his own area. If the Player is clearing a ball then a penalty will apply. If the goalkeeper steps outside the area or his momentum takes him out of the area when he is making a save then a penalty will apply, unless the referee interprets it as an accident.

BACK PASSES ARE BANNED

  • Deliberate back passes are not allowed - even headers. If a Player deliberately passes back to the goalkeeper then a free kick is awarded from the position of where the Player passed back to the goalkeeper. The referee can allow each team a "free pass" in that there will be no foul given, but the rule will be explained.

PENALTIES

  • Penalties are taken 1 metre from the edge of the box. There are no markings, so the referee can make judgement. One step is allowed.

FREE KICKS

  • Free kicks are all direct and can be taken quickly unless the referee specifies.
  • Distance from a wall (if the kicker is not taking quickly) is 2.5 metres (approx. 3 yards)
  • Free kicks for fouls near the goal area are taken approx. 2.5 metres (3 yards) from the goal area (this allows the defending Team to make a wall).

CORNER KICKS, THROW INS AND CENTRE BALLS

  • As well as from direct free kicks, goals can be scored direct from corner kicks and any other dead ball situation - even throw-ins

TACKLES AND SHIN PADS

  • Sliding tackles are not allowed. There is no strict caution for this but all dangerous tackles will be penalised.
  • All Players must wear shin pads. The referee may prevent a Player from playing if he does not comply. This is for Player safety.

CAUTIONS AND SIN BIN

  • Red card sending off will apply in the same way as in an 11-Player game and a "SIN BIN" can be operated. Teams must not argue with the referees.

ROLL ON ROLL OFF SUBS

  • Unlimited roll on and off substitutes are allowed - referee must be informed of any changes.

DRAWN GAMES IN KNOCK OUT STAGES

  • Penalties will be taken, but these are sudden death immediately.
  • Coin toss to decide who chooses first team to kick.
  • As no marking are on the lines, the spot will be approx. half a metre from the edge of the goal box.

PITCH AREAS

The pitch used is essentially a quarter of a full size pitch. The Downhill Hub pitch have blue markings for the surrounding pitch. The goal area is a bit more complicated. The goal area is separated by a yellow line and the closes area to the edge has two white lines available. The part closer to the middle of an 11-a-side pitch doesn't. This means the goal area is marked out as shown below.

The black dotted line shows the goal area to be used. As you can see the left side goal is marked out without the need of marking, becuase the yellow line intersects with two white lines, therefore making a natural goal area. The other side (closest to the half way line on the 11-a-side pitch) needs the small goal lines marked out, therefore we use rubber stripes to show this, with markings to show the goal edge, intersecting with the yellow line.

GOAL AREA MARKERS

Unfortunately, the pitch markings are too small or large for 6-a-side, so we have had to modify the goal area to show the edges. This is in the form of an L shaped rubber piece, which is layed on the corner edges. Not the best situation, but the best solution.
