Glorious win in the five-team tournament.
We were worn out at the start of the second day, but still had an enthusiastic Charles Lor in goal, but this time it was a smaller pitch and six-a-side, which suited us better. However, we lost our first game, but soon got to grips with a set of resounding 3-1, 2-1 and 4-1 wins, which propelled us to the final.
Macca had finally acclimatised after a full year of overseas football and fired in the majority of our goals, with Harper, Gourlay and Arjan scoring one each. On the way to the final, we lost Aj due to injury, but he was replaced with a huge Latvian (Major Toms Lauskis) in the last few games.
In the final, we went 1-0 ahead, but conceded in the dying minutes. Fortunately, we prevailed in the shoot out with Macca missing, but destroying the goalkeeper’s hand in the process. Gourlay and Harper fired theirs in, while Sangha (Davinder) despatched his. It was 3-1 on penalties.
This was Sassco’s first tournament win overseas. We’ve played in successful game series, and various tournaments, but never finished top of an organised tournament. Unfortunately my crappy camera stopped recording for some reason, so we didn’t get any glory, but it remains in our hearts.
Football tour was over, but we spent an afternoon watching AIK get trounced at home in the Friends Arena in Solna, and a long drawn out trip back to the hotel.
The following morning, the flight back was comfortable, although Dave G was shouted at by a foreigner sitting in his seat, and then a minor scare about a delayed or cancelled train (which didn’t happen), meant we got back safely.
It’s Croatia and Zadar or Dubrovnik in May 2025.
