Hylton Castle win the Tournament.

Pulsating 4-3 win over Sassco.

Hylton Castle 4 Sassco.co.uk 3
A fitting end to an enjoyable tournament. Hylton Castle and Sassco both had maximum points and a draw would have led to either penalties or a replay. The game was an open game and hugely enjoyable. Sassco were missing quite a few of the regulars. Corby, Gourlay and Bell were all missing, but Catchy, Tyzack and Lay came in, along with Harrison and Pearson. Hylton Castle put out a similar side to the one that beat Town End 14-2.

The opening minutes saw Hylton Castle control the game until Sassco settled and went 1-0 ahead. A free-kick from Hylton Castle led to their equaliser and an error led to another goal to put Hylton Castle well in control. However, Sassco soon responded and at 2-2, the game went to the break.

Afterwards, it was all Hylton Castle. They won most of the balls and it wasn’t surprising that they went 3-2 up. It was 4-2 with around 10-15 minutes remaining and all of a sudden, Sassco sprung to life and grabbed a goal. From then on, they pounded the Hylton goal only to be faced with an outstanding David Farrell in between the sticks, who responded to everything and prevented the game going to a replay.

So Hylton take the Trophy home. Previous winners included SR-1 and Southwell (twice), but unlike Tuesday’s this competition will only take place next Summer with as many teams who are willing to enter. The more teams in, the better, but if there are only four like this time, each team will play each other twice.

There could be a mini-cup competition soon, but that, if it did happen, would only be for the 30 minutes. The 1 hour games were good, but probably a bit too expensive and too drawn out. This is to be confirmed as it’s probably going to clash with the 11-a-side’s which will be starting up soon.

However, this was a hugely enjoyable tournament with all teams enjoying themselves and without the pressure of the Tuesday competition. Hylton Castle were worthy winners, but special mention must go to Town End and also Southview along with Sassco for making it just as enjoyable as the Tuesday version.

Hylton Castle in pole position.

Stunning 14-2 win.

Hylton Castle 14 Town End FC 2
A struggle last week against Southview was completely overturned this week as Hylton Castle totted up a record score against Town End FC who, in their final game, are firmly rooted to the bottom. Five goals from McGowan and five from Darren Snowball were the highlights. Kallum Griffiths helped himself to two goals and even Hodgson somehow managed to get into the act with two. This result makes Hylton Castle hot favourites now as the last game is against Sassco. A draw will result in a play-off the following week, but if either team wins then they take the trophy.

The final game is next week, Thursday 20th July. Sassco.co.uk v Hylton Castle at 7pm.

Hylton gain an opening win.

Southview can’t win the tournament now.

Hylton Castle 5 Southview FC 4
A close scoreline, but Hylton gained the all-important points. A 5-4 win over Southview put them in good stead for a final day showdown with runaway group leaders, Sassco. Goals from McGowan (2), Snowball and Griffiths made sure that Hylton Castle overcame an awkward one-hour game. Brian Marley’s Southview, now have no chance of first place. A win would have seen them sweating on a Hylton Castle win over Sassco which would have put them joint on points with all the teams.

The next game is next week with Town End FC playing their final game against Hylton Castle at 7pm.

Opening win for Southview.

Hylton back in the competition.

Southview FC 7 Town End FC 1
Southview gained their first win in their second game of the CNSC Thursday Tournament. Town End FC did manage a goal but suffered another heavy defeat.

Good news is that Hylton have belatedly entered the competition. A definite contender for the trophy, they play their opening game on 6th July at 7:00pm against Southview FC. They then play the following week against Town End FC, before the concluding and most likely deciding game against Sassco.co.uk after that.

Please be aware that playing on the Thursday is very flexible, so if a team can’t make it, then they should let the organisers know at the latest on Wednesday morning. Also, this competition isn’t governed by goal difference. If the last game between Hylton and Sassco would be classed as a decider, then the game would last 45 minutes and could have a penalty shoot-out

Sassco’s second win.

Michael Garrett’s Town End FC, put up a spirited performance.

Sassco.co.uk 6 Town End FC 1
Murton was missing, Sammut failed to show and Bell was working until late, which meant Sassco had to call on Josh Lay to fill in, with Anthony Yates on stand by.

Town End FC, controlled by Michael Garrett, were making their debut and put on a good show. The opening half saw Sassco dominate to open the scoring, but then a sustained spell of pressure, along with several excellent saves from McKlusky in the Sassco goal looked as if Town End’s fitness would pay off.

Yet, it was Sassco, with Pearson driving from the back to assist Gourlay and a much pummelled Corby, who scored the next goal.

Overall, they dominated and with three goals, the second half would have seemed a formality. Yet, Town End struck back to make it 3-1. A deserved goal, but with Tommy Bell turning up replacing Sangha, Sassco got their second wind. Further goals meant it was 6-1. Probably slightly undeserved in terms of conceding only the one. Town End should have scored more.

Sporting have withdrawn, which means the remaining game is Southview v Town End FC. There could be a second set of games amongst the three teams, but this is to be confirmed.

Gourlay gets five!

A much changed Sassco gain an opening day win.

Sassco.co.uk 9 Southview FC 3
Sassco, as usual on a Thursday, put out a completely different line up to their Tuesday version. Bell (Wearview), Murton (Hylton Castle), McKlusky (Millfield) and Harrison (Southwick) were the new additions. Corby, Gourlay and Sangha were the only remnants from the Tuesday.

Southview put out an almost identical side as their Tuesday version and took a shock lead with most of Sassco’s team at the other end. However, Gourlay equalised in a superb performance which saw him gain 5 goals in the end. Murton scored 2 while Harrison and Bell scored 1 each. The Southview ‘keeper had a superb game to keep his team in with a shout.

They had a chance in the second as Sassco, despite leading 4-2, had lost Billy Harrison and had no additional subs. Nevertheless, Sassco were too comfortable in a game played at a pedestrian pace in the glorious (and rare) sunshine weather.

Thursday League news.

Fixtures announced and Southview FC replace Hylton Castle.

Hylton Castle can’t commit to a one hour game so Southview were invited in and accepted.

The fixtures for the 8th June are as follows:

6:00pm Southview FC v Southwell FC

7:00pm Sassco.co.uk v Sporting Redhouse

The games for the following week will be cancelled due to England v Trinidad at 6:00pm.

Thursday League news.

Four team competition.

Due to previous problems in getting a regular set of teams for a Thursday League, the 4th competition has undergone some drastic changes.

Now only four teams will contest the League, however, the games now last 1 hour each (30 minutes each way). It’s still 6-a-side, but with roll-on and roll off substitutes. There will be only two games on per night. Each team will play each other team once and the winner in the four team League will be crowned as Champions. Current Champions are Southwell FC.

The competition dates will be announced soon depending on pitch availability. This competition will only run during the Summer and not concurrently like the Tuesday League.

The Cup Competition will be staged with either the four teams or eight. Again, it will be a one-hour game with penalties to decide the winners if required. This will be immediately after the League. Southwell currently hold the Cup.

Current cost per game is £20 and there is no entrance fee required. Due to keeping costs down, there could be a possibility of no individual awards. The winning team will keep the trophies until the next season though.

The four entrants are Sassco.co.uk under the control of Davinder Sangha, Southwell FC under the control of Jon Wardle, Hylton Castle under the control of Danny Hodgson and Sporting Redhouse run by Tarnjit Sangha.

For the cup competition, I am happy to invite four additional teams.

Past Winners: League

CNFL Season 1 Sunderland Select (2nd InTune)
CNFL Season 2 Abandoned

CNSC Season 1 SR-1 (2nd Southwell FC)

CNSC Season 2 Southwell FC (2nd Wearview Elite)

CNSC Season 3 Southwell FC (2nd Sporting Redhouse)

Past Winners: Cup

CNFL Season 1 Sunderland Select 3 InTune 1

CNFL Season 2 Abandoned
CNSC Season 1 Southwell FC 3 Wearview Elite 2

CNSC Season 2 No competition

CNSC Season 3 No competition

Brief history on the Thursday competition. CNFL Season 1 was a huge success. It was neck and neck between Sunderland Select and InTune for most of the season. Yet Select, hardened from their successes on the Tuesday League broke clear and eventually won both competitions. CNFL Season 2 was abandoned not long after starting as I personally didn’t control it anymore due to other commitments.

It was then revived under the CNSC name with a good first season which saw SR-1 triumph in the League and Southwell in the Cup. The second season suffered the Thursday curse as teams dropped out – more down to the lack of organisation from the teams rather than the competition. The Title had to be decided in a Play Off which Southwell thrillingly came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 against Wearview Elite in the dying seconds. There was obviously no cup competition.

The third series was the strongest since the initial CNFL competition. Southwell again triumphed with Sporting Redhouse chasing them all the way. However, two teams still dropped out from a total of 8. Crucially, both the teams which dropped out were newcomers. The remaining six were modified Tuesday teams. This competition didn’t have a separate cup competition neither.

So the future for Thursday’s is to have short competitions with a minimum amount of teams playing longer playing times. The cup will be revived for the 4th series and the Thursday competition, as a whole, will only be played during the Summer months.
