The only unbeaten team in 8 games.
An unusual tournament in which six of the seven teams taking part hadn’t entered any previous tournaments.
The seventh team was Sassco.co.uk as always, but we had debuts from Gateshead HFC, River Tyne FC, Sunderland West End, Wearside Warriors, Witton Wanderers and Marden All-Stars. Unfortunately; a camera mishap meant no games were recorded.
The strongest teams were reasonably matched, but Sunderland West End powered ahead by topping the first stage, which comprised of seven teams playing each other – the top four paired off for semi-finals.
Sassco.co.uk, who had the bulk of the Castle Park team which won in June, came second, with a couple of defeats, but with four wins. This was the same as Marden, who came in third place.
Footing the top four was River Tyne, who were strong and were the only team to hold Sunderland West End.
The eliminated teams were Witton Wanderers, Gateshead HFC and Wearside Warriors. All had some semblance of success, but missed out on the play-offs.
Sassco took on Marden in the first play-off, having defeated them 4-0, just prior to the game. This was a different game. More tight, but Sassco secured a 2-0 lead before errors saw Marden All-Stars turn the match in a matter of seconds and fire in two goals, before the winner in the dying seconds.
Sunderland West End faced River Tyne, but made no mistake this time with a solid 4-1 win, setting them up for the final against Marden.
No late goals this time, for Marden, as Sunderland West End powered through, after conceding an equaliser to score two more. A well deserved win for West End, who were superior to their opponents.
Much appreciation goes to all teams who managed to be aware of their pitch and matches, as we had rapid changeovers. Also appreciation goes out to Ryan Turley and Adam Wilding, who officiated a fair tournament in an excellent manor.
Next tournament is pencilled in for Tuesday 8th October 2024, but we’ll check on any fixture clashes with SAFC or NUFC closer to the time.
The results below show the first stage and then the last three games are the play-offs and final.
