Altitude sickness strikes again at the Beacon.

4-2 defeat against South Shields.

Two defeats from three at The Beacon in 2024, with Sassco’s latest side containing a few under 40 ringers, as they struggled against a strong South Shields team in an over 40s fixture

It was all going well until Michael Brown decided to turn up in some over priced white socks, and spent the rest of the game watching balls bouncing off his rolled up hoses.

We did have a few “new” signings for this one as some of the regular ancients were unavailable (or had common sense not to turn up). Lee Butler came in for his first game in around 30 years and was welcomed by Kev Cooper booting the ball off him after around 5 minutes. We also had an enthusiastic Anth Mullen returning to the Sassco setup after around 5 years and promptly announcing his retirement on social media afterwards, like he did 5 years ago…after his then appearance for Sassco. The two others were Chris Laws (who bagged two goals) and Mick Rawlinson (under 40)

Added to this was the usual bunch of Mike Barker, Marc McDermont and James Collinson, with Liam Paul returning after a 2022 appearance.

We operated roll on and off and it seemed to be working reasonably well. After being under pressure most of the half, with Cooper making some decisive stops – it was Lee Butler who popped the ball forward for Laws to fire in the opener. This was just before half time.

It didn’t last. Early in the second, Shields fired in two quick goals, leaving us chasing the game. By this time, Collinson was wheezing like Darth Vader and McDermont was on the verge of tears. An eventual third and fourth killed us off, before Laws fired in a late one, with a few goalmouth scrambles afterwards, but more of a consolation.

Overall though, South Shields full deserved the win, in another great game at the Beacon; highly recommended. Plus, the footage below is in 4K using a GoPro Hero 8, attached to the fencing area in the viewing platform.

Squad was:

  1. Kevin Cooper
  2. Davinder Sangha
  3. Mick Rawlinson
  4. James Collinson
  5. Mike Barker
  6. Anth Mullen
  7. Lee Butler
  8. Marc Mcdermont
  9. Michael Brown
  10. Liam Paul
  11. Chris Laws
