Six years since Sassco 11-a-side finished off a 2019 Summer League with a 6-2 defeat.
Only McConville and Sangha remained for this new setup, against our regular rivals, MADAS. We hadn’t managed any win over them in the 9-a-side, but did secure a handsome on the 11-a-side field last year.
Our side looked good, with a mix of the South Shields team and Sassco players, so we soon fired in the opener from Mick Rawlinson, who lashed in a loose ball. After this, MADAS seemed to control midfield. We were sluggish and the only action came from Atkar’s mouth, riling up the opponents. My cut and paste team talk and instructions needed time to settle, therfore MADAS deservedly equalised twice in the opening half and had a few more chances. It was only later on when we went 4-2 ahead just before half-time.
Second half we settled and immediately went 5-2 ahead. We eventually ran out 7-3 winners, with one penalty from Brad Wilson, as well as the standard Daryll Surtees crossfield ball leading to their third goal. The back line was settled for a change and was a mix between Davinder Sangha, Daryll Surtees, Amandeep Atkar and Wayne Phinn, with McConville and David Grundy stepping in. Midfield was a mix of Kevin Southerton, Laws, Rawlinson and John Fraser
Brad Wilson and Gary Thomas were mainly up top, with Fraser stepping in as well.
In goal, Steven Brown, was quite comfortable. Late in the game, they were playing long through balls, but he was quick off his mark to smother them.
Gary Thomas scored a hat-trick, Brad Wilson got two, while Rawlinson and Laws fired in the others. Brad insists that we mention his “2 goals, 4 assists. Great call putting me up top, masterclass.” – even though it was a typo in the team line up.
A great performance, but half the side are missing next week, so back to the drawing board.
