New shirt for the 11-a-side.
Tuesday, 09 February 2010 17:07
The new Bunker sponsored Adidas shirt for the Summer friendly games and the 2010-2011 season as well as beyond. The type is Adidas Toque and it contains the usual Sassco embroidered badge from the Weishin Company in China, as well as the new sponsor logo and standard numbering on the reverse (printed by Aztec Print).
The majority of the shirts are sized large and are in long sleeve.
New sponsor for 11-a-side.
Tuesday, 09 February 2010 15:04
Delighted to announce that The Bunker will be taking on the role of main 11-a-side sponsor for next season. This now means that they sponsor the 11-a-side and the 6-a-side. Thanks to iKobo for supporting us for the past two years, but they may well still be involved with us next season and would be the main sponsor for the second shirt.
The Bunker have been involved with Sassco since 2006, when they became the semi-permanent sponsor of the 6-a-side League. They are now permanent sponsors of the Tuesday League as part of the deal which sees them funding the 11-a-side team. A new shirt will be produced to replace the two-season iKobo blue shirt, which has done the team proud by being the longest used shirt since 2004.
New Team Coach.
Thursday, 04 February 2010 08:28
Michael Pearson with Anthony Langan as Assistant.
Due to a complete lack of communication and no responses from Wayne Greenwell, it's been decided to promote Michael Pearson as Team Coach, with Anthony Langan appointed as his Assistant until further notice.
There hasn't been an explanation why Greenwell's being non-responsive, but he failed to make any communication the previous week for the abandoned game and it's been decided that we can't waste time on players who simply don't reply. Pearson was Greenwell's Assistant, but has taken control of the team previously when Greenwell was working. Anth Langan comes in as Assistant.
We set the structure in place so that it runs smoothly as we had a turnaround of coaches in the last season which was unacceptable. Also, just to clarify:
The General Manager always organises the squad of 14 players to be present at the game. It's then the Team Coach's role to organise the playing line-up, deal with tactics and substitutions. He will always take advice from his Assistant, his Captain and anyone else, but the final decision always rests with the Team Coach. If the Team Coach does not require a player to be present then he'll inform the General Manager, who will in turn inform the player (as the General Manager does not want players standing on the sidelines without any prospect of playing).
The Brian Watson interview.
Sunday, 17 January 2010 11:06
Brian, as Team Secretary, has known all the background goings on within the Sassco Organisation for the last few years.
Brian has always been involved in football even from an early age, playing for school teams and numerous youth teams often in goal or the heart of the defence and although age has crept up on him he has kept his passion for the game.
He Formed Downhill Wolves Under-10's in 2003 which folded in 2006 after 3 succesful years having been promoted in our very first season albeit at small sided football. It nearly became Sassco Wolves, but it folded before having the chance (Sassco Impact took on the youth mantle for Sassco, the following season).
Then he became secretary of Sassco in 2006, having been contacted to find the club a new secretary. He took the job himself and enjoyed every minute. He also formed the new ALS sponsored 6 a side team which competed in the Sassco League, which folded due to the lack of commitment by the players. As for the 11-a-side, Brian had to resign at the end of the 2008/09 season, due to the formation of a new youth team of which he is the assistant manager, called Northside United Under-15's, competing in the third division of the Russell Foster Youth League.
He then re-took his post of secretary of Sassco for the 2009/2010 season.
Q) You've been with Sassco for a number of seasons now. What are your impressions of the team, the set up, the players, etc. having already been in charge of other teams yourself in the past?
WATSON: The team on the whole are a great bunch of lads. The set-up has also to be commended and I'm proud to be a small cog in a well oiled machine, as there are a number of us on the management staff , General Manager Sangha, Coaches Greenwell and Pearson, Captain Dave Gourlay and even tea boy Muers, who all muck in when the chips are down. As it was the exact opposite when I had my youth team. I only had one person who would help now and again (and the failed Sassco duo*) but it was to no avail as the club folded after 3 years.
* That was Mickey Donkin, who failed to coach the youth team.
Q) After winning the Fair Play Trophy for 2006, Sassco have turned into the "bad boys" of the division with a number of yellow cards, including a major red card in the incident we're not allowed to mention. Why do you think the discipline has suffered?
WATSON: It should be drummed into the players heads by the management/captain - NO DISSENT, I can't remember the last time a Sassco player was booked for a rash challenge (can you?). However our discipline has improved slightly due to the removal of certain players (hotheads) and harmony has been restored to the dressing room.
Q) Sassco famously never train, or warm up before games. What do you think of this?
WATSON: Well I guess its because of work commitments and the six a side league, that Sassco never train, however I think the team should warm up before a match led by the captain / coaches*.
* Simon Mulvaney took the role or pre-match warm up in Portugal.
Q) How have your dealings with the League, opposing teams and the Council been as you tend to be the main point of contact.
WATSON: My dealings with everyone concerned have been ok, just a few problem teams who fail to contact you sometimes and you have to contact them!
Q) As Team Sec. you tend to be given an open reign by General Manager, Sangha. Do you think you have full autonomy to do what your think is best for Sassco, or do you think your hands are tied?
WATSON: Although I've got full power to control Sassco and do what I see fit for the good of the club, I've never had to use it due to the nature of the club structure with most things taken care of by Mr.Sangha.
Q) What, in your opinion, is the direction that Sassco should go now?
WATSON: Like I said before; the removal of certain individuals has made Sassco stronger, with the team starting to gel under new tactics and management, as you can see by our rise up the table. Keep it up, lads. Lets not waste our opportunity this year (2010) as we have been in this position before and we blew it. We could possibly look for another pitch in the future as Downhill Pitch F has got worse year after year.
Aspirations for 2010: To see Sassco win a trophy and to revive my idea's of a Sassco Youth League and write a book titled The History of Sassco Part I.
The William Harper interview.
Tuesday, 29 December 2009 22:05
Mr Harper has always had his opinions. It was only fair to interview the "Tash" with some hard hitting questions.
Q) In your opinion, you said on many occasions that Sassco need to take the "next step." However, General Manager, Sangha has always said that "he doesn't take it too seriously." and "can't be arsed." Has your opinion changed or if not, what comments do you have?
HARPER: My opinion hasn't changed and will never change until you see the errors of your ways. You have a good but erratic side which has got to get that extra solidity to win things.
Q) You were a failed member of the Portugal Tour 2009, mainly with injury after deciding to jump into a swimming pool, an act Sangha described as "like someone hoying a house into a bath." Were you very disappointed? Are you going to get into shape for the next tour? And were you bemused by the goings on in the tour, for example, 50% of the players stumbling into the hotel 6am on Sunday morning with an 11am kick off time for the final game.
HARPER: Yes I feel as I failed the lads and that is why my weight has gone down a stone* since coming back from Portugal. I will show certain people that I can play, or should I say consistently play at a level they are capable of, even at my age.
* Need to lose more than a stone...
Q) Manager Sangha traipsed a good few miles on the Sunday morning to get you a sandwich in Portugal, but you refused to eat it as it had tomatoes in. Do you regret this?
HARPER: No, I'd still say the same now.
Q) You played in Sassco's first ever game. What do you think about the progress of the team itself. Sangha has always said that technically, the team has stood still for around five years, as shown by various league positions.
HARPER: The team has progressed hugely that is why they are ready to go out to win things with a few more gifted players and also to stop the moaning at each other, even from you Mr Sangha.
Q) You offered your services as Team Coach at the start of the season, but failed to show for many games, before the job was given to Greenwell. What were your reasons for being typically unreliable?
HARPER: Mainly the lack of team members who stuck together, you should have binned the rotten ones who were bringing the other down even if they are decent players. Also your unwillingness to let the squad get bigger so they had to fight for their places. You know my principles on this as much as anyone.
Q) The team still has a core root of players who originated in 2002; Sangha, Greenwell, Gourlay, Dixon, Pearson, Muers, with sporadic appearances from Stubbs and to a lesser extent, Wardle. All teams evolve, but Sangha tends to stay loyal to his regular, reliable players. Do you think this is a good thing or bad thing?
HARPER: I think it's a great idea but you still haven't brought the best out of these players purely by not taking them to the next level. That is what they want if you really asked them to be honest.
Q) You've said you've won plenty of trophies, etc. in the past, but there's no documented proof of this, despite you saying you'd bring the evidence. What are your comments on this statement?
HARPER: I won everything you can win at a local level at school and after school. Sunderland boys and County player, my trophies and medals at my mothers are still there along with my two County ties and four County cup winners medals. What actual proof are you after Dov and I'll see what I can do.*
* Photos on Facebook.
Q) Who, in your opinion, are the current key players for Sassco.co.uk, and who are the poor additions?
HARPER: Good additions, Gourlay, Smith, Greenwell, Muers and Pearson, they all have given a hell of alot for the cause on the field. Poor additions are the people who have attitude problems or believe they are better than they really are. You know exactly who I'm talking about*.
* No I don't. Please specify.
All in all Dov they are a great bunch of lads with some brilliant characters to boot but it still doesn't stop the fact that you and selected others deserve more than you have actually achieved.
The Michael Pearson interview.
Tuesday, 29 December 2009 14:45
In the first of a series of interviews, Michael Pearson, a long standing, original member of the team, now Assistant Coach, answers some in-depth questions.
Michael was selected by General Manager, Davinder Sangha, to join the team back in it's debut game in 2002 and has remained a regular player in recent years, having been non-regular during the mid-years. And he was recently appointed as Assistant Coach to the team.
Q) William Harper, in one of his many outlandish, Pele type claims, once considered you "the best young player in Sunderland." Do you think this has put pressure on you?
PEARSON: As we all know, William “Tash” Harper has a vast amount of experience and is very knowledgeable when it comes to football. Some might say he even played like Pele in his younger days. So when someone like that makes such a statement about a young player it does place a bit of pressure on a young person’s shoulders. Part of being a footballer is about learning to handle such pressures and I feel I owe a lot to Sassco General Manager, Davinder Sangha, for helping me to develop myself further, not just as a player but also as a person.
Q) You stopped playing for Sassco in the Saturday morning Tyne & Wear League after criticising the team heavily in the press. Manager, Sangha, once famously said, "If there was a Hell, it would have to freeze over" before considering you for the team again. Yet you came back. How do you feel the team has developed, as you are one of the original players?
PEARSON: Sassco originally started out with, on paper, a strong looking squad that could challenge for honours but after a poor start in the TW League things went tits up. Internal bickering between players and management alike looked like Sassco would be another one season team. Somehow, Sassco managed to keep on going for a few seasons but the same problems arose season after season and I became a bit of a non – regular. Sassco have never managed to sustain a settled consistent squad and have had many different coaches* giving it a go with very little success.
However, this season has seen a remarkable change in fortunes for this Sassco squad. Gone are the players who some might say caused problems and in came a few new and old faces. The managerial team has seen yet another change but this time has proved successful...so far.
Being an original member of the Sassco brand from the very first day I have seen many good, bad and very humorous times as well as many, many...many players come and go but I can now see that the team is now realising its true potential. On the field the team is beginning to play consistently well and have had some excellent results so far this season and can hopefully build on that.
Off the field Sassco is one the most organised and well ran clubs in local football. No one can argue with that. Everything from the superb website, trips abroad and links with various north east clubs and it is all down to Dov. He might not have the tactical nous to change a game but he can certainly make the Sassco brand bigger and better.
* Coaches since 2002 have been: Davinder Sangha (several long spells and various interim roles), Dave Watson, Dave Gourlay, Neil Richardson, William Harper and Wayne Greenwell.
Q) Its common knowledge that once you're in a relationship with a girl, your football career effectively ends. What are your comments on this?
PEARSON: When I have stopped playing for Sassco previously it was down to a number of factors. I don’t want to dwell on the past, I just want to look to the future and drive Sassco forward. I take my role with the club very seriously.
Q) How do you feel about having your brother, Anthony, in the team?
PEARSON: I think it’s great to have young talent in the team. I feel he fits in very well into the way we play and has made the left hand side of midfield his own by being in excellent form recently, scoring 5 goals in his last 6 appearances. Obviously with him being my brother and me being part of the managerial team some might expect favouritism but I would like to go on record to say I am his biggest critic and we often have many disagreements with how we rate each other’s performances in games. No player is favoured more than others. Each game a team is picked that we think can win.
Q) Its quite obvious that General Manager, Davinder Sangha, considers you the true power behind Greenwell's throne (you are currently classed as Assistant Coach) and Sangha has on several occasions attempted to undermine Greenwell with undue pressure and also a whispering campaign to install you as Team Coach. Do you think this is a good or bad thing and what are your comments on the situation?
PEARSON: Greenwell and I are working hard to make Sassco a force to be reckoned with and part of that is to make the squad a strong unit with a united team spirit and any whisper campaigns will undermine our hard work. After our recent run of form I feel as if the management team has answered their critics. Hopefully everyone squad member is on the same page now and we can continue to build on our form going into the New Year. We have competition for places now which is something we have never had before. Times ahead look bright for Sassco and I look forward working alongside Greenwell and hopefully take Sassco onto the next level.
Sassco and Newcastle Science City.
Tuesday, 22 December 2009 18:30
Sassco have been invited, and are likely to take part (in some form or another) in a training experiment involving Newcastle Science City (http://www.newcastlesciencecity.com).
Eric Foch, Lead Innovater, contacted us regarding a "project offering video support to amateurs sportsmen and women, for fun or for training purposes." The prototype will run in February or March. It will be directly pluggable to the Internet, which makes it compatible with the way Sassco.co.uk use the website as a focal point of every activity we do (which is why were were contacted).
I have already described the make up of the team, notably Mark Muers, and it seems the project will be able to help him to improve his fitness.
Early days, but more information will be added in January. Will keep all posted.

Apart from his goal, Emu did f**k all and now owes £24 to Durham FA.
Pearson opened the scoring but I was bricking it as the nice white shirts we were wearing were getting dirtier. I rode over Greenwell and Pearson's instructions for the second half to get stuck in, by asking the team to avoid any sliding tackles or diving headers, as I'll have to bump the machine up to 50 degrees, along with a pre-wash and a super-rinse. No doubt I'll have to spray some pre-wash on and reckon it's going to take at least two washes. Not good. Not good at all.
Anyhow, back to the game. Pearson opened the scoring with an excellent goal as we seemed to be under pressure. Nevertheless, we soon went 2-0 up when Langan scored a superb goal. Everytime we seemed to attack, we looked as if we'd get a goal. Dave Gourlay's shot squirmed wide and I'm not sure what Mark Muers was doing. His shot also went wide.
2-0 at half time and we knew it was going to be difficult. The pitch was a quagmire by now and Country Park Inn, who also featured one of our ex's, Mark Sammut, broke the fragile offside trap to reduce the deficit. They did have the upper hand, but eventually, as time wore on with around fifteen minutes remaining, Muers broke clear and used whatever comedy pace he had to secure the decisive goal. Up until that point, he was wallowing around in the mud like a hippo with an Adidas shirt on.
The mist comes down over Sassco, as Country Park Inn score their only goal, early in the second half.
Greenwell got one right in the balls late on. Everyone was looking at the sidelines expecting me to do something. I just suggested I call his new girlfriend and tell her everything's off, as he hobbled off the pitch, to be replaced by me. I went up front and spent the last ten minutes trying to navigate my way through the mire and at the same time keeping my shirt clean.
Discipline problems again. Muers, Langan and Pearson were all yellow carded. Also, Langan and Pearson are in arrears for £4 each and need to clear this before being eligible to play again. Mickey Pea's been using the oldest trick in the book, by telling Emu that he pays me on Tuesdays. Muers not realising that I haven't seen Pearson on a Tuesday for around three months.
The general discussion after the game was that it was a difficult game, but Dave Smith didn't really have many chances to save. The ones he did - he did well. Our fourth win on the trot. To view the up-to-date table, bypass the one on this site and go directly to the WCFL.org.uk site.
The other thing of note was that, hypothetically, if me and Muers had a love child, we reckoned that he'd look like Wes Brown.
Sassco.co.uk 7 Park View 2.
Saturday, 05 December 2009 16:24
Muer's gets a hat-trick, but Pearson persuades Park View to give the Man-of-the-match to Langan.
Yes, we may have our fancy website; the best around. We do have our over ambitious, but still successful, tours overseas and we may be kitted out in the finest custom gear, including footballs, as well as being uniquely Adidas long before they started releasing kits in the UK. But we always remember our level, which is the lowest amateur level available to adults. This is something that Park View failed to get in their heads when the game was struggling for a referee. We tried long and hard to get a stand-in referee, with no luck.
Eventually it was decided that me, Brian Watson or Greenwell would have the honours. Spanner in the works when Park View refused to play under these circumstances. Pissed me off no end. What other reasons would a team at this level use? No clean running water, no room for spectators in the stands? To much dog turd on the pitch (apart from the players)? It's quite obvious that I don't give a hoot about health and safety. We need to look at the level we are at. If we have to ram two posts into either end of a pitch and run a string along the top, then that's good enough for me.
In the event, Peter Maguire managed to get a referee in, so my rant above was wasted.
Park View had been a problematic side for us in the past, but they were a pale shadow of the team from a few seasons back. The much maligned and diseased Muers put Sassco 1-0 ahead, before his equally rotund partner, Langan, made it 2-0. Greenwell was absent due to work, so Michael Pearson picked the team in a 3-5-2 formation (the inset video shows the beginnings of his historic team talk). It worked, but both wing-backs, Dixon and Pea, struggled, so it was reverted to 4-4-2 when Park View came back strongly.
Second half saw Greenwell turn up and replace Dixon, who spent the second half slagging off Anth Pearson (until he scored). By this time we were 3-0 ahead from Muers before they pulled one back. It didn't cause us any problems as we ran out 7-2 winners. Muers scored three. Langan scored two, while Stoker and Anth Pearson scored the others. Stoker actually provided a running commentary during the penultimate goal, calling everyone "paedo's", "kiddy fiddlers" and "fat c**ts." Tourettes well and truly in force.
Sassco.co.uk 6 The Cove 0.
Saturday, 28 November 2009 18:32
Undefeated in four games with a comfortable win.
The players decided to bring a Nike match ball to play with today, much to my disagreement, so much that I threatened to ram a screwdriver into it. Nevertheless, I Photoshopped it out of all the match photos.
Against The Cove, it was an expected win for Sassco as the team are now unbeaten in four games. Greenwell's dilemma was increased when there were returns for Mulvaney and Stoker, however Scott Smith forgot his gear (but was still there). Nevertheless, the team was strong enough.
Muers poked in the opening goal before Anth Pearson nodded in Langan's blast off the cross bar. We had around 10 corners in the first half and probably 25 during the whole game which demonstrated our dominance.
Early in the second half, Langan scored and the game was settled. Two further goals from Gourlay (including an excellent dribble from the half way line, beating the majority of the opponents) and a final one from Langan, gave Sassco a decent 6-0 win. Teams have been hammering The Cove and the main reason we probably didn't add to the scoreline was the poor state of the pitch and our lack of any decent, clinical centre forward.
Muers took a hissy fit when I (with Greenwell's approval) subbed him instead of Dixon in the second half. Greenwell didn't want to make the decisions as no doubt, Emu would release the pictures on Facebook he's been storing. He must have something as there's no conceivable way in which any idiot would play that useless tank up front.
Still. Can't complain too much. A good win.

Another comeback.
Sassco are widely becoming the comeback kings now. Two weeks ago, it was a 3-0 deficit, now it was a 3-1 reverse.
Greenwell, after the traumatic experience of being abused in Portugal, suffering homophobic taunts and seeing General Manager, Davinder Sangha, attempt to undermine him and install his golden boy, Michael Pearson as supremo, now seems to have found his niche. From a large squad the previous week, it was back to Sassco standard with only eleven players. The team suffered a 3-1 deficit at half time, but regrouped and overturned it in spectacular fashion to end the game 5-3. Goalscorers were Greenwell (2), Anth Pearson and Chris Dixon.
A more full report will actually be posted when Greenwell gets his finger out of his arse and his masturbating hand off his penis to write the report. Dirty, filthy brute.

Hylton won 4-2 on penalties.
I'm in preparation to be hauled up and bent over in front of the discipline committee, who will take turns running along the corridor to boot me up the arse.
I can actually picture the scene. In sultry Atlanta, Georgia in the USA. Craig Taylor, amongst the directors of iKobo International, sitting in their plush high-rise office boardroom thinking, "What the f**k is Muers still doing up front?"
Yes, even Sangha and Sassco are accountable. Greenwell's accountable to me and I'm accountable to my paymasters. Luckily, the chances of iKobo executives hopping on a transatlantic flight to position a boot up my arse is unlikely to happen. Until then, the pressure remains on Greenwell despite his six-month fixed contract. He had suspected Swine Flu earlier in the week, so you know if Emu gets it, both fiddlers have been sharing spit in the showers again. Disgusting.
A controversial game. Maybe Sassco have grown up a bit. Greenwell's placing his stamp on the team and pissed Si Mulvaney off by not putting him on directly at half time. I also didn't select Campbell or the returning Langan to bolster an already bloated squad.
Murton might well have stopped the kid's getting any presents at Christmas, as he squared up to the referee once we had let a late 1-0 lead go. Mickey Pearson scored the goal in the last fifteen minutes. Sassco were truly impressive. The squad was solid from the back, with Greenwell learning from his errors last week and playing two solid centre-half's, Stoker and Scott Smith.
The game ended and it was penalties. Gourlay and Stoker scored, but Pearson, Muers and Macca missed.
Can't damn the performance. It was excellent. The pressure seems to be ebbing away from Greenwell, despite the abuse given to him in the last few weeks (mainly from me). Less said about the Murton incident the better. We'll have to take anything we get hit with on the chin.
It was good to see Greenwell taking full control of the coaching side of things. I'll still handle the squad and the logistics, but he does the team line ups, the subs and everything to do with football. I'm a bit distracted these days. Even ran through a red light at Heworth.

Anth Pearson saves Greenwell's job.
Greenwell's job was hanging by a thread and it took Anth Pearson, a player I and Neil Richardson had discarded during our reigns in the past few months, to save it. Pearson was the reason why Greenwell can now relax with a six-month rolling contract which was confirmed after the game.
It looked so different in the first half. Greenwell was readying himself for the axe, with Mickey Pearson lined up to replace him. The team were 3-0 down, with Greenwell's tactics coming under fire for failing to utilise Mark Muers, Mickey Pearson or Mark Middlemiss in centre defence. Instead opting for Paul McConville. Pearson slotted a supposed consolation goal at 3-1, but second half saw the anger come out. Within moments of the restart, Anth Pearson had reduced the deficit to 3-2 and the pre-planned changed came. Both McConville and Dixon were removed, much to their disgust. Dixon actually stormed off and left to go home. Fancy Dan, McConville had a slanging match with me, where I responded that we'd be happy for him to de-list from the squad if he didn't like being subbed. In any case, it was quite obvious that McConville was struggling in centre half, in contrast to his performance in the opening two games in Portugal.
The other questionable point is how the hell Emu still retains his spot up front. It's quite obvious that him and Greenwell have a thing going, because based on this performance, he must be doing special tricks with Crunchies and Maltesers to retain his place.
There was also a welcome return for Gareth Stoker, fresh from the sex offenders list. Oh how we missed him calling everyone(including his own team mates) "Paedos" or "Fiddlers"
Greenwell himself struck the equalising goal. We could have gone on to win - but that was too much to ask.

Soaked! Greenwell's role under threat.
Back to the rainy days in Washington. From the heat and humidity in the South of Portugal, to the cold wet and harsh conditions in the Northeast.
It was obvious what we lacked from Portugal. Cressy and Hembrough, or to be exact, strikers. A team packed with defensive players somehow grabbed two early goals. An in-direct free-kick from Gourlay and then a decent effort from McDermont.
We conceded a goal soon after and struggled from then on. Greenwell announced he was injured on the morning and the team put together was decent enough. A good team talk saw the team perform well from the off.
Unfortunately, Greenwell decided to do a runner midway in the half (with Sassco leading) and failed to return, despite saying he would. His job is definitely under threat and the vultures are hovering. Two more games is all he has to prove if he is up to the task. After that, the Technical Committee of Sangha, Watson, Muers and McDermont will decide if he is to receive the sack (with no pay off).
A replacement Coach has already been lined up in utter secrecy.

Disappointing game, really. We were 2-0 ahead, but succumbed to a quick response and then a difficult second half. Both teams seemed evenly balanced, but Sassco took the lead with a bullet header from McDermont. He spent the rest of the game camped in the opponents half and failed to make any more impact.
The game was very niggly. Dave Gourlay, David Murton and Mark Muers were all yellow carded. Ironically for arguing amongst each other and not for anything else.
The second goal came from excellent work from Murton, as he capitalised on a goalkeeper error to make it 2-0.
Criminally, almost from kick off, McDermont slipped and the lost ball ended up in the back of our net. It was 2-1 at half time, but we were still confident.
The second half saw Arms gain an equaliser from a corner. We seemed to lose it then. The third goal was almost inevitable, but the fourth was a killer. Paul McConville struck a consolation and we should have got back into it. Poor defending saw Arms score the fourth.
Our last game before Portugal. Shame we didn't go there with a win under our belt, despite a reasonably opening half.
Wayne Greenwell's comments:
Today I thought we played for each other and that was complemented with a two goal lead after 27 minutes.
The most memorable of the two was Macca with a soaring header a salmon would be proud of, but to be honest we were up against a good team in the league and it never took long for them to equalize, but bearing in mind we were deservingly in front.
Marky Mark was back in the team today and in one word was "colossus." He gave the back four shape, bite and pace unmatched in both teams. Also the clown we all know as Macca made an appearance, and for him to get past players in the way he does consistently every week must mean there is a bit skill involved in his play. Dave G was awesome in the middle with his constant availability for a pass and pin point accuracy. Paul Mconville dropped a "Dov" when a long ball was misjudged and saw it sail over his head for one of their players to run in on our goal and score a fourth goal, putting the score at 4-2. But to give him credit, in the last ten minutes he raised his game and, after a spell of Sassco pressure, the ball fell to his feet and he smashed a beauty past the keeper to put us in for a shout. But a turning point of the game for me was when Baby Pearson had to go off with a injury to his ankle at half time. Until then his performance was an 8/10. Good play and tracking back made him a instrumental part of the set up.
So, to summarise:
We were playing good football and deservingly took the lead by two goals. They equalized shortly after and then went on to take a commanding lead (4-2). But we fought back to 4-3 and with the team going for the draw - we conceded again putting the game out of reach. But that never stopped the team pressuring a fourth for ourselves with their keeper pulling off two excellent saves from my free kick and again from Bunta's. Campbell had a late chance and he deserved a goal for his performance. Emu was quiet today, but still played well,
Wayne's inspirational quote of the week:
"Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking..."
Wayne Greenwell 9/10 (official MOTM) David Simpson 7/10 Simon Mulvaney 7/10 Mark Middlemiss 9/10 (possible MOTM) Paul McConville 7/10 Dan Campbell 7.5/10 Anth Pearson 7/10 Marc McDermont 7/10 Dave Gourlay 8/10 David Murton 7/10 Mark Muers 7/10 Chris Dixon 5/10

Poor defending, but dirtier drop-outs.
Dirty drop-outs were Macca and Titch. Anth Langan didn't reply to any texts
during the week, so I assumed he would not be there. We drafted in Anthony
Pearson, Dan Campbell and Wayne Ramsay. David Murton also made his bi-weekly
appearance. Bad news is that Mickey Pearson is injured for a while. Marky
was at work, while Scott Smith was also the same. No reply from Tim. Titch
sent me a text this morning asking if I'd received his text last night. Well,
no, because he didn't send one. Macca waffled on about being in hospital,
or something like that.
Mickey Pearson hobbling across the
pitch with a bag full of Kronenburg.
Needless to say, very angry. Not a great start for Greenwell to start his
coaching role with Sassco. Despite this, he was reasonably positive after
the game with his comments (we'll put an end to that soon).
Wayne Greenwell's comments: "Today was the first of many steps in the
new Sassco outfit. The effort was there clearly but the mistakes were ever
present in our third of the pitch. So next week there will be changes to the
back four with the introduction of a new centre half. The midfield was a steady
6 out of 10 today. An excellent performance by Muers up front earned him two
goals and they were excellently taken for a man of his size and ability. Simma
also had a good game despite conceding six, he was more vocal than ever before
and I could even hear him over Dov's abuse towards Muers (justly deserved
at times).
"So to summarise the match: The first half went as well as could be expected;
battling against gale force winds. The team as a unit performed well, putting
us in a good position to push on in the second half. But as we started the
second forty five complacency set in and cracks appeared in the back four.
Ball watching and poor man marking gave away cheap sloppy goals. But less
said about today and lets push on and look ahead to the next game and I know
we will perform better, thanks for the effort today lads."

Stubba assists with two!
I take the blame for todays defeat. Why? Well, not for the on the pitch theatrics, but because I spent a couple of seasons trying to get Washington CC to join the WCFL. They're actually doing very well. Unbeaten and at the top of the league.
We were on a hiding to nothing. We were missing Murton, Pearson(s), Macca, Tim and rising star, Mark Muers. We managed to rope Dave Smith and Scott Smith in. Stubba also showed up and Titch made a return after missing two games. Dixon and Marky were also there.
First half was reasonable. We conceded early, but then had around three chances which were poorly executed. They then scored their second excellent goal.
Second half was hit and miss. Wayne Greenwell and Anth Langan took over tactical duties and will be doing so from now on. I've said plenty of times that pulling the squad together and getting them there, plus arranging kit, etc. means that the tactical side of things really isn't worked on. Both players want the role, so it should be interesting what ideas they come up with.
We conceded a third and fourth in quick succession. By now we were jaded. After the fifth, Titch got one on his tally with an assist from Stubba. Stubba then got walloped and Gourlay put away the penalty. Our only highlight of the second half was the excellent and battling performance from Scott Smith in defence.
The final score was 6-2. Poor and disappointing, but half expected with such a threadbare squad.

Sassco are beginning to played a refined version of the Dutch "Total Football" system.
Refined as in they do what the f**k they want sometimes. We were missing a few. Steve Conlin was on work experience with his school (cheers for that one Simon). While Tim and Dixon were both injured. Marky Middlemiss was roped into working. There were returns for Campbell, Mr. Murton and Anth Pearson (who refused to come on).
We started reasonably brightly. However, when the first goal was conceded, I remembered my last words in my much listened to team talk; "Don't . . . give . . . away . . . corners . . ." Simon, under pressure from a long(ish) throw, nodded the ball out for the aforementioned corner and they headed it in. After this it was all the usual complaints:
"Change the system"
"We're too high up the pitch"
"We're too deep on the pitch"
"Get Muers off the pitch"
We settled after this and the game levelled out. We didn't have clear cut chances, but were getting forward easily, but not releasing the ball quick enough. Eventually, Muers managed to scramble the ball into the net after their 'keeper made an error.
I was planning to change things, namely getting Gourlay out of left back where he was "wasted" (private joke - you won't get it) and into the middle. But decided against it. For the second half, a superb opening move nearly led to a goal, but Langan shocklingly lashed it over the bar when clean through. Both Greenwell and Murton missed excellent chances as well (one hit the post). We were punished. A long ball caught McConville fannying about and their player didn't have any problems in looping the ball over Simma, who, incidentally, pulled off some astonishing saves throughout.
We applied pressure and when the ball landed at the feet of Langan, he made no mistake this time and we had equalised at 2-2. The scoring ended there, but in the last crazy ten minutes, we were camped in the box and each corner coming in was cleared off the line, tackled at the last minute or just badly scuffed. An error by Gourlay then saw The Saltgrass sprint up the field and nearly score if it wasn't for Simpson. A scramble at our end, where a goal was certain, was smothered by Simpson.
A good game. My voice is hoarse after spending the game slagging Macca off. Rumours are currently flying about around Macca and Langan leaving. The rumour mill is full drive when it comes to Sassco.
Oh, and I lost a f**king ball again. Some moron kicked it behind the goal and didn't retrieve it. Will be bringing a f**king tennis ball for all away games now.
Park View 2 Sassco.co.uk 5.

Two fat ladies on top and two goals a piece.
A few changes for the Park View game. Bri Watson was missing and enjoying a dirty weekend at Lumley Castle and Harper failed to show again. Back to bare bones again, with only myself as substitute. However, everyone who said they were going to be there, did turn up. There were returns for Marky Mark, Dave Gourlay and Si Mulvaney, all who were missing last week.
Plan was to put the two fat golden oldies up front; Langan and Emu. Got to be realistic and say that Park View aren't one of the stronger teams, but both did enough to warrant a return the following week in the same position. Langan fired in two and Emu did the same (with one disallowed).
Muers actually gave Langan a lift in the car and the discussion on the way was that if they were women, would they be slags? Apparently, Muers said he'd bring 10 blokes round to his house (which beats the 5 he already does). The discussion spilled out during pre-match when hypothetically, if some of the team changed into women and sold themselves, the pitch fees would be comfortably paid off. Yet there was a clause put into the change in that our faces wouldn't change (but the bodies would). So the idea of a toothless Greenwell with long hair standing on a street corner swinging his hand bag wouldn't be a decent way of getting any funding in.
Back to the football: Gourlay, wasted at left back, scored a penalty.
We were 3-0 up before Simon decided to pass the ball back to Simma. Sounds simple enough, but it was an elaborate scuffed kick, but referee, Terry Ward, gave a free-kick and Park View scored. We ended the first half 4-1 ahead.
Second half saw Tim come off with injury and me replacing him. Soon after we went 5-1 up when Gourlay's cross was chinned into the back of the net by Emu. They then scored, but no more goals after that.
Tiredness was setting in and both teams suffered. The weather was glorious though and equally more as Sassco took home their first three points.

Good effort, but nothing to show for it.
Despite the negative scoreline, it was Sassco's best 90 minute performance after two poor opening games. But, being realistic, it was just another defeat.
Most said after the game that we didn't deserve the defeat, but my opinion is that we did. The better team always wins. They take their chances and we don't. Saying that; having an aging and balding ginger haired centre forward, who shaves his head out of denial, isn't really going to get us the number of goals that we want.
We conceded early in the first half when Dave Smith, getting an outing in preparation for Portugal, misjudged a cross and they scored. After this it was quite even. Murton (yes, Murton) had a rocket of a shot saved from an angle. Macca skied an easy chance. The aforementioned Muers scuffed to opportunities. By this time, Dixon playing as centre half was injured and Tim came on to replace him. I can't complain about the effort. The centre half pairing of McConville and Gillespie were excellent. Even poor Simma at left back was strong. Campbell was on the right.
Second half saw Langan wanting to come off after another ineffective performance on the wing and in attack. Although he did complain about the long balls instead of football to feet. The chances died down in the second half, but as the game wore on, we got an equaliser. A speculative shot from Muers caught the 'keeper stranded and we were back in it. But, as always, squandered chances cost us. In the last five minutes, Houghton scored a goal through a ruck of players and it was 2-1. We seemed to run out of steam and moments later, a long range shot settled the score at 3-1.
Good performance, but lack of finishing has cost us again.
Despite the major loss of players, we had a good full turn out, with Murton, Wayne Ramsay, Greenwell and Dave Smith all being available. From a management point of view, the team is quite easy to organise now. Harper turned up, but late, so he didn't really have an input in the starting team talk. I'm looking for a full-time coach now. Someone who would do the team talks and line up. My choice of candidates would be Mulvaney, Langan or Greenwell.
Colliery Tavern 7 Sassco.co.uk 2.

Wasted second half opportunity.
We were definitely going to be short this week. I knew this from last week when Nelly, Farquhar, Stoker and Langan all scarpered without getting the nets down.
However, Langan did make a return and was selected to start. Gourlay was still missing, but there were returns for Greenwell, Dixon and Gillespie. Stubba and Keith Mouat were also due to make a reappearance, but were unavailable. Ironically, had they been there, we'd have featured a number of players who played in our very first game.
The Colliery Tavern were beaten by us last season on the rare occasion where we had our full strength side. This time, it was a pale shadow of the strong team from last season. Stoker, Robinson, Graham, McDermont, Gourlay, Raeper and Richardson were all missing or had moved on.
The eventual result was one-sided. First half was a great performance. The wind was at us and we repelled everything we could. A superb cross from Langan quickly equalised their opener. They scored again, but Dixon's cross squirmed under the 'keeper. Last throw of the first half saw them lead 3-2.
Everyone thought the second half would be a comeback for us. It wasn't. Instructions were to get the ball to their half and then strike on goal. Apart from the first ten minutes, when we had several chances which were missed, we seemed to lose the plot. They scored to make it 4-2 and the game was effectively over.
Ironically, despite the scoreline, Paul McConville had a superb game at centre half. Mistakes by his partner, Muers, were the reason for a few of the goals. The well known saying, "like a knife through air (not butter)" ably describes the movement of players past him. Tim had a good game as well coming back. Campbell also performed decently, despite Rikki Kennedy and Wooton abusing him from the sidelines.
Not a good start, but no arguing. Not bad.
Sassco.co.uk 0 Cambridge Hotel 2.

An opening day disaster in every sense of the term.
We were already quite short. Gourlay and Graham were missing. Tim and Campbell weren't there and Marky Mark was also absent. In place we had Wayne Ramsay and Steve Stubbs helping out.
However, it wasn't some much the 2-0 defeat, but the complete indiscipline late on. We were getting butchered in the surprisingly goalless first half, but after Tyson had put Cambridge 1-0 ahead in the second half, we had our best moments. Titch, coming back from injury, looked threatening, but missed two glorious chances. Stoker, playing in attack, saw his header shave the post.
It was then that the nastiness came out. Stoker and Nelly were at each others throats. Nelly was playing with an injury, so he had his excuses. Stoker walked off with two minutes remaining after Cambridge scored their second goal.
Stoker, Richardson, Farquhar and Langan will be absent from the next game due to the fact that in my team talk, I clearly stated players won't be playing if they don't help with the nets. I'll stick to my guns.
Harper also failed to show as he had to arrange a hospital visit.
On a busy Saturday afternoon, both main routes into Cramlington from our side of the county were struggling with road works. I chose both the wrong routes there and back. Travelling there we got stuck on the Tyne Tunnel traffic. On the way back, the poxy Sat Nav took us on to the A1. Nelly went AWOL and we were also lacking Dave Graham, Mark Muers and Dave Gourlay, Titch Conlin from the regular set up. Marky Mark made a return, but just about everyone else was there from the previous hammering off West Auckland Town FC.
First error occurred when I drove into the kid's playground and parked next to the swings. Simma (aka Driving Miss David Simpson), as expected, followed me. We eventually got to the car park of the Samms Centre. The centre was quite impressive - not too different from the changing areas at Northumbria Centre. We did have the unfortunate sight of Macca's excuse for a penis in the changing rooms. Langan and Stoker both exclaimed, "How the f**k do you f**k with that?" Macca's reply was that he wasn't too bothered and that he's learned to live with his inadequacies. The second error was that Harper was missing. We were now around ten minutes away from kick off. I just assumed he'd got sick of the whole show and dropped out. I spent around one minute on tactics in the team talk and around five minutes slagging him off, only for him to ring and say that he thought it was a 3:00pm kick off. Eventually, the traffic beat the Tash back to Sunderland.
With Tash obviously not going to show for kick off, me and Gourlay hastily put together the team (Gourlay was injured, but there for moral support). Stoker was plonked in attack from the off. Newcastle BT looked impressive. They are in a higher standard than ourselves, but finished near the foot of the lower division in the Northern Alliance (that's the League, not the pre-Iraq War rebels in the north part of Iraq). Still, they would be classed the same as a strong Premier opponent for us.
It seemed to show as they had some decent chances in the opening moments. They eventually scored, but from kick off, Macca put Stoker through to equalise. From then on it was an even game. Our left hand side was weak. An "injured" (that's what he claims) Dixon and Macca faled to stop the opponents putting in good crosses. A lot of it was a simple lack of marking and sticking tight to the opponents. We soon leaked two easy goals. The team was in a bit of disarray. Questions were being asked by the players as a change was obviously needed, "What's happening on the sidelines?" someone said to Dave Gourlay, to which he replied, "Well, Dov's taking photos...."
Changes were made. McConville who was ineffective and deserved his "Fancy Dan" label was moved from centre mid to centre half. Marky replaced him. Digga and Macca were also switched. Macca was inept on the left hand side, despite assisting with Stoker's goal. He didn't give much help to Dixon, who spent the game kicking the ball to the opponents.
The changes didn't do too much. Within minutes, they were 4-1 up with a simple through ball. Eventually they got another and it was 5-1. After this, I came on to replace Dixon and the team immediately received a lift. No more goals were leaked. I can't take all the credit, as Simpson pulled off some excellent stops throughout the ninety minutes. I went up for a corner in the last minute, but was thwarted by the 'keeper when a goal was certain.
A good day out. Traffic was a bugger, but the Tash's complaint that we need more local games is quite insular. He needs to realise that Sassco go out far and wide to promote the name. Sort yourself out Tash and give your head a shake. The pitch was quite hard, but the venue was excellent (in my opinion). The weather was also excellent. A bad result though, but mind you, I got some good photos of the airplanes and trains.
"Dov did well," quotes Michael Pearson. " We need experience like him in the team. These young-un's like Campbell and Mulvaney haven't got a clue."
"If he came on earlier, I think the score would be reduced. Bad mistake keeping Dixon on as long as he was. I'm not sure having Harper as the coach is the right choice. Sangha's team talk; especially the section where he slagged Harper off, was poetic." said Gourlay.
William Harper's task as the newly installed Team Coach was to restrict the score to no more than eight goals. Admittedly, this was said in jest as we've had some bad hammerings from Northern League Shildon AFC in the past four Summers and I really wanted to come away with a respectable scoreline against new, but still, Northern League opponents. A goal would have been much appreciated, but it was too much to ask.
However, Harper's biggest problem wasn't the opponents or the long trek down to Bishop Auckland; it was actually in-fighting. Mainly from Nelly (who made zero impact throughout the game) as I made the controversial decision to have Stoker on the subs bench. My plan was to keep the line up as it was in the 12-4 win over Rutherford DFC. Harper's suggestion was that I pick the side, perform a brief team talk and then over to the Tash. Stoker decided to get changed back into his civilian gear. As far as I was concerned, his brief one season stint with Sassco was over. As everyone should know by now, Sassco get through everything. Most people remember my refusal to back down to Greenwell, electing to play with ten players instead (and getting a draw).
First half saw West Auckland control most of the game, but we conceded from some errors. Two came directly from Muers as he was easily sidestepped or misjudged the headers. The others came from Si being beaten on the right hand side. Another one might have come from a deflection from McConville. Nevertheless, Auckland gave us a bit of a lesson. It was 5-0 in their favour when the half time whistle went.
It was at half time when the whinging went into overdrive. Nelly started waffling on and Stoker complained on why he was sub. I explained to them in no uncertain terms told anyone who isn't happy to can easily join the alleged queue of other teams lined up waiting for them. Harper settled things down and explained that the reason why the score is the way it is is that our level and theirs is quite different. Encouragement was the key. Second half saw Stoker stripped and ready for the game. He came on a few minutes after the second half whistle and gave away a penalty.
Only two further goals went in during the second and the final score was a reasonably respectable 8-0.
Our very own Dave Graham single handily (his own words) took on a mainly youth based Cheltenham Town FC in a friendly for his Royal Corps of Signals team. He wasn't able to prevent a 2-0 defeat, which doesn't bode well for his appearance against West Auckland.
To further quote Dave Graham, his technical analysis of the game was summed up in a few sentences, "F**k me they were quick. We gave as good as we got though. It was a tough 90 minutes, really quick pace."
This follows a pattern where Dave Graham had previously spent ninety minutes representing Sassco by battering and along with Stoker, bullying another mainly youth team, Forest Hall, who were recently defeated (match video available in the Media / Video section).
The match report for the Cheltenham game and photos are available on the Cheltenham Town FC website which can be seen by clicking here. The football section in the Royal Signals website can be seen by clicking here.
Sassco A v B game.
Thursday, 23 July 2009 07:49
On the 15th August, we have access to our home pitch for a pre-season game before the season starts the following week. It's likely that we'll put an A v B game on like we did last season.
Surprisingly, the B team destroyed the A team last season by a 5-1 scoreline. Wayen Ramsay and Anth Pearson helped themselves to one goal each, while Steve Stubbs scored two. It was so bad for the A team (controlled by Brian Watson) that the B's (run by Davinder Sangha) only had ten men for the first ten minutes. The full line ups from last season's game are as below:
Sassco.co.uk 1 Gareth Stoker Sassco XI 5 Wayne Ramsay, Steve Stubbs (2), Anthony Pearson, Mark Edmundson Sassco.co.uk: Gavin Kershaw, Tim Gillespie, Gareth Stoker, Mark Muers, Marc McDermont, Wayne Greenwell, Andy Swinhoe, Mark Cresswell, Dave Gourlay, Mark Middlemiss, Stephen Lewis. Sassco XI: Dave Smith, Dave Simpson, Davinder Sangha, Jamie Wilson, Mark Edmundson, Steve Stubbs, Mickey Pearson, Ed Morrison, Anth Pearson, Paul McConville, Wayne Ramsay.
By the time of the A v B game, the A team (to be controlled by Harper) should give an indication of the line up / squad for the opening league games. Obviously with Sassco, players come and go, but that tends to be worked out during the course of the season.
The Sunday games closer to the season start pose a bit of a problem for me in getting a squad together. Most of the players have Sunday commitments, which is the reason for cancelling the previous Sunday game against Wylam Celtic.
Yet, for this one against Rutherford DFC, we managed to get a good turnout, despite McConville, Richardson, Dixon and Stoker all missing. I roped in Jon Wardle and Mickey Pearson early in the week and late on, Gav Greener requested a call up and had a very impressive game at centre midfield. Rutherford DFC are the same team we've played in the past few Summers under the guise of Newcastle United DFC, Whitley Bay DFC, Newcastle DFC and now under the Rutherford banner. We were playing against Andy Farrer and Gavin Brown, both ex-players for us a few years ago.
The game was played in a very laid back atmosphere. The sun was blaring down and the venue was the 3G at Gateshead. We were due to play at Rutherford, but their ground was waterlogged. Luckily Gateshead was free and we had a 1:30pm kick off.
We opened the scoring with Dave Graham notching one as he was in attack. Langan was out wide to try and get similar Nelly type service to him, but nothing much seemed to happen on the right side. He eventually went up front later in the game. Rutherford DFC equalised when one of their players was injured in the box. We all called for the ball to be kicked into touch, but everyone froze and Rutherford easily scored. No matter, the second goal for Sassco came not too long after when Dave Graham fired in from close range. A third was eventually bundled in by hat-trick hero Graham and a fourth was scored from a goalmouth scramble with Titch getting in on the end of it. Titch really didn't have the best of games. The midfield was easily controlled by Macca and Greener. Macca was having a good game - but not a patch on McConville's heroics last week.
Second half started with Wardle coming on and scoring within thirty seconds. This occured when he bulldozed past their players at the back. Complacency saw Rutherford reduce the arrears to 4-2, but after that, we broke away with several goals. Muers scored when his crossbar effort was adjudged to have gone behind the line. Gourlay (who came on at half time) scored a penalty and then Wardle scored a thirty yard rocket. For a fat lad he can't half kick the ball.
The best goal came from Dave Gourlay as he took the ball inside their area and beat around five players before rounding the 'keeper. Gourlay was also sporting his new look hairstyle, which the watching Rikki Kennedy and Liam Wooton (making notes for Redhouse) admired and compared to Demi Moore's hairstyle from Ghost. Rikki even went so far as to say, "she played well." It was getting easy now and Rutherford exploited the gaps at our back by scoring two further goals. However, these were interrupted by Gourlay and Macca scoring. Dave Graham grabbed another one late on when he scored from a tight angle. He later claimed that "only professionals like me could score from angles like that."
12-4 was the final scoreline. Andy Farrer had me concerned by telling me their team was stronger than last Summer (when we beat them 10-2), but amazingly, Andy Reay was officiating. He pointed out he had a slight groin strain, but that immediately meant our defenders didn't have a threat to deal with.
All the players did very well. Simma didn't have much to do. At the back, Si and Emu weren't troubled much. Mickey Pearson had a great game at centre half. Anth Pearson also did well, but bottled it and came off injured. Gav Greener was outstanding at centre midfield. Tim was also very good at left wing, but is still missing that elusive goal. The last time he scored, we used to wear red shirts.
A good run out. Next week's going to be a bit more difficult.
Due to Rutherford's home venue being waterlogged, we are now playing at Gateshead's 3G turf again. The kick off time has been moved forward to 1:30pm. The cost to hire the venue is £78, so match subs have gone up to £3.
Now playing at West Auckland Town.
Thursday, 16 July 2009 07:10
Delighted to announce that instead of playing on Gateshead's 3G turf against Northern League opponents, West Auckland Town FC, we will now be playing at their home ground, Darlington Road on grass.
The game time has also changed to 3:00pm, but the date is the same being Saturday 25th July 2009.
We play away to Rutherford DFC on Sunday the 19th July, before this game.
As mentioned before, West Auckland are the same famous club which was founded in 1893. They are widely regarded as the first World Cup winners after memorable exploits which saw 'West' win the Sir Thomas Lipton trophy outright after a second trip to Italy where they defeated Juventus 6-1.
3-0 down. Simma the Legend, McConville the Hero, Stoker the Albanian.
The video of the game is now available in our new Media section, where you will find all the videos taken in the past few years. Please click here to go to the Media section. This is available in full quality DVD on request. If for any reason you are having problems in viewing the embedded video, please visit http://www.blip.tv and search for 'Sassco', where you will find this game as well as a variety of videos.
An away trip up North to Geordie Land. The Tyne Tunnel was closed, so it was the long way around. Paul Mc had Stoker and Gourlay, I had three, Simma had three. We were facing Forest Hall again. Last Summer, we somehow came away with a 3-2 win, despite intense pressure from a good team.
The game itself? Well, what a turnaround. 3-0 down and seemingly dead and buried against a bunch of youthful whippets. It didn't seem to be Sassco's day. The 4-5-1 formation failed, mainly because both Gourlay and Dave Graham didn't support Titch in attack.
The team was strong enough, with only Langan, Dixon and Emu missing. Even though the first half was disjointed, the team limited Forest Hall's chances in a scrappy game. Macca had a "dummy out" moment as he continued his poor form from the last game. We conceded two quick goals in the opening and failed to get an momentum going. The game also flared up with both Stoker and Graham complaining to the referee about bad challenges. Stoker was incensed as their number 8 was winding him up. The referee (who was a stand in ref) threatened to abandon the game at one stage.
The two goals were poorly conceded, but a third was nearly given. Marky Mark slotted in for Stoker (who wanted to come off) but was put into a difficult position and gave a penalty away. Simma saved it. Simma was a true legend in this game. He made so many saves it's hard to count them. He kept the opponents at bay until we decided to get back into it. Well done, Simma.
Second half we went back to 4-4-2. Dave Graham partnered Titch up front. Tim went left wing and Nelly on the right. Campbell slotted in as left back. They still scored. The game was at 3-0 and it looked lost.
Then the comeback. Gourlay put away a penalty and the confidence was up. Ten minutes later, we'd scored five goals. By now, Stoker had come on in attack with Dave Graham. The second goal for Sassco came quickly from Nelly and instantly we gained a third when McConville, who had a brilliant game, scored to seal the comeback. We weren't finished. Dave Graham and Stoker both leapt for a header from Nelly's pin point cross and Graham got the goal. 4-3 and then even better: 5-3. Stoker's Brazilian / Albanian skills saw the ball roll from his nose to his leg. He flicked it and struck a piledriver. I was so gobsmacked that I didn't manage to get it on camera. I was just staring in disbelief like all the players on the pitch.
By this time, Titch was itching to come on. He did but immediately gave the ball away and got a bollocking. Forest Hall reduced the arrears to 5-4. But Titch justified his return and scored a fine goal where he turned the opponent inside and out. Stoker actually set up McConville's goal and Titch's goal.
This has got to be one of our most memorable victories and games. Thank God it's all on camera. As mentioned, I missed Stoker's goal mind you.
Quotes attributed to the players after the game*:
"Sangha was inspirational. His half time team talk was mind bending and we immediately set out and fulfilled his instructions. He's a great person." Marc McDermont.
"Dov's the reason why I play football. Nothing better than playing for Sassco." Neil Richardson.
"If Dov says I'm wasted at left back, then I'm wasted at left back. He knows the players to the last detail and everyone should respect him." Dave Gourlay.
A shambles of a performance from start to finish. Mistakes were being made by everyone and the result wasn't surprising in the end.
Being a Sunday game, we couldn't get the likes of Jimmy, Titch, Farq and Dave Graham in. Dixon was also missing, but we managed to get a total of twelve players there. The side was cobbled together and I only did the line up on the back of an envelope around half an hour before kick off. In hindsight, it was the wrong line up, but we should have gone ahead earlier in the game. Leam Lane were actually of the same standard as Thomas Wilson, but we were not clinical like last Saturday.
Anth Langan came in for a belated debut after some regular six-a-side appearances back in the early 2000's and celebrated with a goal. However, it came at the end when we were 4-0 down. Both Pea and Muers were ill or injured and Pea came off first. Muers, hobbling around at the back, miraculously gained a new lease of life when I placed him in attack and bombed from left to right, nearly getting a goal in the process. Our problem was that we wanted to walk it in. No shots were taken from outside the area and to be honest, Macca, Pea and Si had shocking games. With an already depleted team, we really needed to be on top of our game and were way too complacent. Tim came back for his first in ages and had a decent game.
A good run out for fitness, but a poor performance. The camcorder was in action, but luckily the battery ran out once Pea decided to become the next Francis Ford Coppola by opening the view screen and draining the battery. Well done Pea; I think you missed their last two goals (and ours!). I'll try and upload the limited highlights regardless.
The Tash might have his work cut out for him, but in reality, were always going to struggle playing on a Sunday.
Brian Watson returns!
Saturday, 04 July 2009 17:56
Surprised and pleased to get a few emails just now from Brian Watson. He's coming back on board as Team Secretary. He'll be busy for the next few weeks, but when we knuckle down to some competitive action, he'll be there just as before. Welcome back Bri.
So now we have a Team Secretary and a Team Coach. Everything's fine and dandy.
New Coach: William "Billy" Harper.
Friday, 03 July 2009 20:22
It's finally happened. After around eight years of battles against each other, William Harper (commonly known as Billy, The Tash and various other names) has decided to cut his losses and jump into bed with the enemy (not literally, thank God).
On a serious note, the world renowned William Harper, will operate in the role vacated by Gourlay and Richardson before him. We will also endeavour to kit him up in coordination with Adidas equipment. General Manager, Davinder Sangha, will pull the squad together as before, but it will be down to Mr. Harper to put his tactical knowledge in place prior to the games. His first appearance is most likely to be on our game on the 11th against Forest Hall.
Mr. Harper spent the last season with Sporting Redhouse, but prior to that had stints in charge of Sunderland North, Sporting Club Sunderland and the infamous Toddy's (details available in the Archive Section).
His playing days saw him debuting for Sassco in their first ever game in 2002, with sporadic appearances up until 2005. Since then he was mainly involved in the Castlepark Junior's team.
Northern League West Auckland Town.
Wednesday, 01 July 2009 12:36
We will be playing Northern League opponents, West Auckland Town FC. The venue is Gateshead's 3G artificial turf.
West Auckland are the same famous club which was founded in 1893. They are widely regarded as the first World Cup winners after memorable exploits which saw 'West' win the Sir Thomas Lipton trophy outright after a second trip to Italy where they defeated Juventus 6-1.
The 25th is going to be a very busy day for Sassco. We actually have a game against Northern Alliance Rutherford AFC (lost 1-0 last season) on the same day. I'm trying to get the Rutherford game on at 11:00am, so it's likely we'll have a very large squad if players cannot manage two games. I'll possibly call on some ex-players and players from the 6-a-side to help out if necessary.
Sassco.co.uk 7 Thomas Wilson FC 2.

A good run out and a good performance.
A humid day and a good victory with a full Sassco team despite missing quite a few of the regular players.
Macca, Marky, Dixon and Kyle were all out. Murton's two month contract had expired early, but we had 14 including myself. Liam "Woody" Wooton also turned up and finally signed on the dotted line after months of wrangling over wages, etc.
Other news was that Stoker was presented with his player of the season award, which I then broke in half. Macca's leading goalscorer award was also available, but since he wasn't there, we gave it to Jimmy instead.
Thomas Wilson were an unknown quantity to us. They finished in the lower half of their division, so I expected a decent result from ourselves. The game kicked off a few minutes late and despite Sassco controlling the midfield, the better chances went to Thomas Wilson. Eventually, we broke the early deadlock with Jimmy scoring two goals. Thomas Wilson hit back almost immediately and the game looked as if it could be tight. However, despite the setback, Sassco immediately struck back with birthday boy, Dave Graham, seeing his chance saved. From the resulting corner he was fouled and Gourlay put away the penalty, much to the disappointment of the aforementioned Action Man Graham. Dave G proceeded to celebrate by himself.
3-1 in the first half. Jimmy wanted to come off and was replaced by Woody. In the second half, changes were made. As mentioned, Woody came on just before the half, but Wayne Ramsay and Dan Campbell replaced McConville and Pearson. The second half was more open, but Sassco seemed to come out on top. A goal was scored by Wooton and Titch got two. Jimmy also got his hat-trick when he came back on late in the game. A typical second half when we were racing ahead. Overconfidence left gaps at the back, and with the changes it was a bit disjointed. This helped Thomas Wilson score their second half goal, but we have Simma to thank for some excellent saves which definitely stopped Thomas Wilson getting more.
A good win. The Thomas Wilson team were well organised, but this was their first game in, while for ourselves, we're used to the artificial pitch as well as having the majority of the players in action during the six-a-side.
I screwed up with the price for the pitch. The dude told me £28 a couple of weeks ago and my arse dropped when it was revealed to be £57. Some scrimping and scraping meant that Sandhill's won't be smashing my windows this weekend as the full price was paid.
Cheers to Ken Street for officiating and to the Thomas Wilson lads for a good, clean game.

Northern Alliance opponents.
Wednesday, 24 June 2009 06:07
Another fixture has been added to our busy schedule. On Saturday, 5th August, we travel up north to the Dudley Centre (known as John Willie Sams Centre) to play against Newcastle British Telecom, who play in the Northern Football Alliance in Division 2.
The location of the pitch can be found by going to the Fixtures / Results menu and then clicking on to the DUDL text on the left side of the fixture. You can do the same for all the other fixtures. The pitch is grass and we've been invited back to their club house for food and refreshments after the game.
66.66667% Sassco conquer a five-a-side tournament.
Tuesday, 23 June 2009 06:25
Four players from Sassco out of a squad of six took part on the behalf of Azure-design.com in the PowerLeague Five-a-side Cup in Gateshead. The players involved were Davinder Sangha (in goal replacing the much poorer Ed Cook) Chris Dixon, Dave Gourlay and Jimmy Raeper. The other two player were ex-Sunderland AFC's Martin Smith and Sammy Bindoff. Martin Smith everyone knows about, but Sam could be described as a ultra skillful Tim Gillespie. Posh sort, etc.
It was two groups of four and I think we were in the strongest group. In the event, we won the first game 7-3, while we lost the second to a team featuring ex-Boro player, Dean Gordon. Also, Gourlay got sin-binned for four minutes and the loss was a 3-2 one. Finally, we hammered a team featuring a Times Inn player, 9-0, to make sure we were through to the Semi Finals.
The Semi Finals pitted us against a team which we truly hammered 6-1. Ironically, Dean Gordon's lot got easily dismissed in the other Semi Final, so our Final opponents were put to the sword and we won 4-2 - being 3-0 up at one stage.
The comprehensive domination embarrassed the Azure Technical Director, Peter Daykin (who once donned a Sassco shirt back in 2006), as he fully expected a team containing me to be easily defeated. Got to be honest - I was like a cat between the sticks, despite slowly being cooked alive in the weather proof goalkeeper top, which is more suited to the sub-artic temperatures at Downhill.
The tournament was well organised, but the way some of the teams were kitted would have given me a heart attack if it happened on a Tuesday. Mind you, Dixon looked like a tramp and only the special powers of Photoshop make him look half decent in the photo above (a better quality pic will be added soon).
Paul McConville and Wayne Ramsay had their version of the Tuesday team in, but they failed to reach the Semi Finals.
Away day to Forest Hall.
Monday, 22 June 2009 12:43
On Saturday 11th July, we are away to Forest Hall, who play at the 3G turf at Northumbria University's Coach Lane Campus.
Last year, we somehow defeated them 3-2 after suffering intense pressure during the second half with a threadbare squad.
The line up last year was Dave Simpson, Simon Mulvaney, Mark Muers (Davinder Sangha), Gareth Stoker, Paul McConville, Tim Gillespie, Mark Cresswell, Neil Richardson, Ed Morrison, Stephen Lewis and Andy Swinhoe.
The highlight of the game was me replacing Muers after we'd just conceded at 2-2 and then going on to win when Nelly's pin point cross resulted in a late Stephen Lewis header to make it 3-2.
