Two unexpected wins for Durham.
Durham Pine 2 Royal Mail 1
Official Man-of-the-Match: Richie Curry (Durham)
Without Jamie Fleming in control, this season was always going to
be difficult for Royal Mail. However a strong squad faced a Durham
team who were annihilated 5-1 in the same game last Season. Although
Royal opened the scoring with Langan, they soon fell back as Durham
were more hungry for the win. A 2-1 win for Durham was just rewards
for an excellent performance.
Crown Electrics 3 Select Interiors 2
Official Man-of-the-Match: Sean Forrest (Crown)
A new look Select Interiors took to the field against a Crown Electrics
(formerly PCB) with debuts for Gary Davison, Kevin Davison, Jason
Amour, David Walker and Tarnjit Sangha. The 1st half was dominated
by Crown Electrics with John Wardle and Gary Rolls having several
shots at the Select Interiors goal. At this point Crown Electrics
were on top and dominating and Select Interiors were finding it
difficult to even get the ball out of their half. With half-time
approaching it looked like Select Interiors were going to hang on
at 0-0, but Crown Electrics struck two late goals after terrible
defending from Select Interiors back three.
Tarnjit Sangha and Michael Booth entered the field at half-time
replacing Kevin Davison who had a disappointing debut and Neil Pilkington.
The second half started differently with Select Interiors having
more of the play, David Ellis pulled back the deficit after good
build up play by Tarnjit Sangha and Jason Amour. Just as Select
Interiors thought they may claim a draw Crown Electrics took their
lead back to 2 goals through John Wardle. Select Interiors didn’t
give up and continued to create chances and Jason Amour pulled a
goal back, but it was too late as Crown Electrics ran out 3-2 winners.

Official Man-of-the-Match: Paul Richardson (Durham)
A lacklustre performance from a new look Sporting team with only
Cairns remaining from the original line-up meant an opening day
defeat against Durham who had just finished playing 30 minutes earlier.
Gettins came off the bench to score both goals as an impressive
looking Durham team finished the day on top with maximum points.
Slipway 5 JJB Sports 1
Official Man-of-the-Match: Richard Oliver (Slipway)
With Richard Oliver now on board the loss of some of Slipway’s
key players did not really concern them. JJB Sports with Alan Burn
still firing the shots played some excellent football but were mainly
let down by their shooting and also excellent goalkeeping from Turnbull.
Oliver fired in an excellent hat-trick whereas the ever present
Melvin Keith added the other two.

Sporting Back on Track.
Tyne Port 5 Bassenthwaite Whites 1
Official Man-of-the-Match: Phil McNerney (Tyne Port)
A great start to the new season for Tyne Port, who had a lot to
prove after suffering a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of their opposition
last season. From the kick off, possession was fairly evenly balanced,
but Tyne Port created the better openings and went ahead through
Tom Monaghan after some neat passing in the midfield. The lead was
doubled shortly after, Monaghan running on to a through ball to
slot home. Shortly before half time, Tyne Port went 3-0 up, with
Chris Dixon curling in a corner kick. The second half saw early
pressure from Bassenthwaite result in a goal to bring the score
back to 3-1. At this point there were signs that the game could
begin turn in Bassenthwaite’s favour, but two quick strikes
from Chris Dixon made the score line irreversible. After suffering
a nightmare of a start to the last season, Tyne Port are now hoping
to build on an excellent start.

Select Interiors 5 Slipway 1
Official Man-of-the-Match: Simon Williams (Select)
After last weeks disappointing performance against Crown Electrics,
5 new changes were made for the game against Slipway with only Gary
Davison starting who had started the previous week. In came Tarnjit
Sangha, Michael Booth and new signing John Cairns, Simon Williamson
(both from Sporting Redhouse) and Mark Laughton. After just one
minute Slipway were awarded a penalty when Mark Laughton appeared
to step inside his own box. Up stepped Richard Oliver only for the
ball to rebound off the crossbar and to safety. This spurred Select
Interiors on and they created chance after chance and by half-time
had a 3-0 lead with 1st goals of the season for John Cairns, Mark
Laughton and Michael Booth. The second half continued where the
first half had left off with the Slipway goalkeeper pulling off
several fine saves to deny the front three of Select Interiors.
The lead was increased with goals from Michael Booth and John Cairns.
With the score at 5-0 Jason Amour entered the field replacing Tarnjit
Sangha. With minutes remaining Slipway scored a consolation goal
beating Davison at the near post. Overall a satisfactory result
for Select Interiors who hope to build on this in their next match
against last season's double winners Royal Mail.

Debut boy, Shakespeare easily filled the boots of the departed Langan
with two goals and a superb all round performance. Goals by the
ever reliable Pringle and League Player of the Season (Season 2)
Steve Lawson sealed a comfortable win for Royal Mail

Sporting Redhouse 4 Herrenknecht 0
Official Man-of-the-Match: Anthony Langan (Sporting)
A disaster for Herrenknecht who failed to muster a single shot on
goal, but an excellent performance by Sporting who out thought and
outplayed their deadly rivals during the whole game. Langan, newly
signed from Royal Mail scored two goals and former Royal and Slipway
player bagged the other two. This was unquestionably one of the
worst performances ever seen by a team who were individually highly
rated. Basic lack of planning and completely losing heart after
only conceding one goal had the hallmarks a very unprofessional
team. Ironically, no single person was to blame as all the players
(apart from Garrett in goal) played abysmally. As one of the teams
tipped to win the League, it seems that Herrenknecht could be well
out of the reckoning after one game. Not due to the result but the
performance. It may take a long time for Herrenknecht to recover
from this.

Durham Pine through.
Durham Pine 2 Redhouse WMC 1 (CUP)
Official Man-of-the-Match: Paul Richardson (Durham Pine)
Durham made sure that they were well in control of their League
and Cup form with a fine 2-1 win over Redhouse WMC. The 2-1 scoreline
did not reflect Durham’s dominance. Paul Richardson, in particular,
had an excellent game which resulted in his second Man-of-the-Match
award. Durham, this Season look likely to be a major contender for
the League and the Cup. Durham have always had a solid team but
essentially lacked flair in attack where the main problems seem
to be. But this Season, Paul Richardson has solved the flair and
helped contribute to the goalscoring along with Brian Gettins who
has developed after two Seasons into an impressive forward
Kail Engineering 3 University of Sunderland 1 (CUP)
Official Man-of-the-Match: Andy Patrick (University)
Kail celebrated their first win of the Season in this Cup encounter.
University were disappointing as they suffered yet another defeat.
Lack of planning seems to be an inherent problems with the “laid
back” University team. What they really require is strong
leadership and players who are there for the cause rather than just
another Tuesday kickabout.

Official Man-of-the-Match: David McLaren (Tyne Port)
Cant really think of a good thing to say about the performance.
It was a close game that could have ended up 5-5, but the team performance
was a total contrast to last week. Disappointed after such a good
start to the season. The whole game was one big frustration, we
couldn’t get our act together at all. JJB scored first and
we had enough chances to equalise but didn’t draw level until
near half time. The tone of the game was summed up when I was through
on goal twice and knocked the ball too far in front of me straight
to the keeper. Then the ref blew for time when Phil was running
through with just the keeper to beat and probably would have won
us the game. David McLaren got booked at the final whistle for telling
the ref what he thought, so basically a bad day all round. Ed made
some good saves in goal, but that was about it.

A fine performance from a JJB side, which has not got of to a great
start. JJB dominated the game for spells but never really looked
like getting anything other from the game than a draw, after Alan
Burn put them ahead with a cool finish. However Tyne Port well known
for their collective brilliance were resilient as ever and were
never out of the game. With only a one goal lead (goalscorer) intercepted
a sloppy ball and took it on to notch the equaliser. Both sides
can consider themselves lucky to get any points despite both sides
claiming they deserved to win. JJB's dominance saw them hit the
post twice, once from new signing Haldane, whilst Tyne Port were
denied a clear goalscoring opportunity by the referees final whistle.

Royal
Mail shattered. 2 defeats in 3 games for the Champs.
Herrenknecht 4 Crown Electrics 2
Official Man-of-the-Match: Stephen Wilson (Herrenknecht)
The biggest problem for Herrenknecht this Season was the acquisition
of Stephen Wilson to play alongside John Hunt. Both were fierce
individuals who preferred possession play rather than the passing
game. But as seen from the likes of Durham Pine, Sporting and Select
Interiors - the physical game seems to be on the wane and a more
patient pass and move system seems to work. A rethink by the whole
team and mainly by Hunt and Wilson worked splendidly as Herrenknecht
switched halves with leading 4-0. Goals from Stephen Wilson, Gavin
Wilson and two (one slightly deflected) from Hunt finished off the
Season 2 Cup Finalists within 10 minutes of the start. Tremendous
work and excellent movement and passing by the team made sure that
Crown Electrics had no real chance. For the first time since they
beat Sporting 4-2 last season, Herrenknecht put in a performance
after which they could hold their heads up high. The were a few
negative points when Herrenknecht gifted Crown 2 goals mainly due
to tiredness. Also the possession play seemed to take hold late
in the second half, again due to tiredness and a lack of movement.
All in all, an excellent performance from a well organised, positive
team.

Slipway 2 Tyne Port 0
Official Man-of-the-Match: Phil McNerney (Tyne Port)
A tight match which could have gone either way, but a disappointing
performance from our point of view as we never really got to grips
with the game. Early Tyne Port pressure saw Dixon miss a good chance
and hit the bar as Slipway were on the defensive, but the breakthrough
came at the other end of the pitch when Ed Cook deflected a shot
into his own net. Tyne Port pressed looking for the equaliser but
failed to make the breakthrough. The second half was much the same,
and saw Slipway double their advantage with a counter attack. Man-of-the
match Phil McNerney also had an off day in front of goal, dragging
his shot agonisingly wide with only the keeper to beat. All in all,
a frustrating evening as possession was not converted into goals.
Tyne Port will need to rediscover their cutting edge quickly to
turn their recent slump around.

Official Man-of-the-Match: Alan Burn (JJB Sports)
Durham Pine reverted to their old pattern in a 2-2 draw against
a JJB Sports team which did exceptionally well in their final game
before the winter break. Durham took no heed of this as their main
asset, Brian Gettins was on the bench. Alan Burn, inevitably, put
in another masterful performance which earned him a man-of-the-match
award to take the game to Durham. With a 2-1 lead and time rapidly
running out - Durham looked extremely nervous but finally gained
a point with a late equaliser. Not exactly a bad result for Durham
as it seems that every team has now either drawn or lost - everyone
is now on a even footing but it seems likely that Durham, Slipway,
Sporting and Select will be the clear front runners now.

Official Man-of-the-Match: John Cairns (Select Interiors)
Select Interiors against last seasons Double winners Royal Mail
was without doubt the most intriguing clash of the night. Royal
Mail set the standards for all teams to reach with there stunning
Double triumph last season, while many have been giving plaudits
to the way Select Player/Manager Tarnjit Sangha has set his team
up as an all out attacking unit. Right from the whistle Select Interiors
went straight at their illustrious rivals, with Select's Simon Williams
firing off at least five shots within the the first five minutes.
Royal did not know what hit them. The relentlessness with which
Select attacked, especially down the wings with Mark Lawton on the
left and Simon Williams on the right was quite awesome. John Thirwell,
at the heart of the Royal defence was constantly on the back foot,
as John Cairns and Trevor Walker took it in turns to attack through
the middle. Amazingly it was still 0-0 at the break, as Select had
totally dominated the game and spurned many chances. Again Select
went at their opponents right from the whistle, and they finally
got their rewards as Cairns latched on too a long throw from Williams.
From there on in it was all Select Interiors. They dominated Royal
Mail right throughout the team, beating Royal to every ball and
challenge. Sangha marshalled the whole Select side from his position
at the centre of defence. It was a joy to behold. At the final whistle
Cairns had hit an hat trick, while his strike partner Walker settled
for two. One thing is for sure, Select Interiors have definitely
thrown their hat into the title race.

The replayed game after the original was considered null and void
after a penalty mix up followed the same pattern. Sporting went
ahead but Slipway managed to keep in control with several chances
and one which hit the cross bar. Just as time was running out, Melvin
Keith scored an excellent equaliser which sent the game to penalties.
Sporting eventually triumphed 3-2 in sudden death penalties. It
could have been so different had Joe Dove not taken (and scored)
a penalty before the referee had blown his whistle. Obviously when
he took it again he missed…
This was, in the opinion of the League Secretary, a perfect advertisement
for this League. Since it’s inception, I have always wanted
a League where two teams would play each other with, pride, passion
and aggression. Both teams were fully kitted and dedicated. Both
these teams wanted it badly. The skill level on show was incredible
and the fierceness in which both teams tackled each other was a
true show of how much it meant to them. And to consider that this
is “only” a Six-a-Side competition. Without a doubt
it is the best Six-a-Side anywhere….we aim to keep it that
way

Crown Electrics were smarting after a 4-2 defeat by Herrenknecht
the previous week - so they were determined to improve against an
on form Slipway team. They did by opening the scoring, but in an
excellent end to end game both teams could have won it so a draw
was an acceptable result.

The most important thing for Tyne Port going into this game was
not the result, but to try and improve the level of performance.
The last couple of games have seen the team lacking in cohesion,
so a new approach was adopted, with Dixon dropping into midfield
and McNerney operating as a lone striker. The new tactics appeared
to work well as, despite going 2-0 down, Tyne Port developed much
more of a grip on the game that they have done in recent weeks.
Another impressive performance by McNerney was rewarded with two
goals - the first an unstoppable strike from 20 yards - to bring
the game back to 2-2 with 10 minutes remaining. Monaghan nearly
made it 3-2 on a quick break, but was unlucky to see his effort
denied. Sporting hit back to restore their advantage, before Dixon
converted the equaliser. Cook had to be at his best at the other
end with a fine save to keep his side in the game, while Tyne Port
almost snatched it with late efforts from McLaren, Ross and Dixon
all well saved. While there is still room for improvement, Tyne
Port have gained some much needed confidence, suggesting the recent
run of poor performances could be over.

Yet again, Bassenthwaite struggled against a determined Durham Pine
team. Bassenthwaite appear to be on-course for Relegation but actually
opened the scoring only to fail to maintain it.

Official Man-of-the-Match: Mark Lawton (Select)
Select Interiors took the field against JJB Sports knowing nothing
less than a victory was required. They had just seen the leaders
Durham Pine extend their lead at the top of the table, with a resounding
4-1 win over Bassenthwaite. Player / Manager Tarnjit Sangha, brought
three new faces into the team. In defence came Graham Smith, to
replace Sangha, while Paul Lawton was brought in to partner John
Cairns in attack, to replace the vacating Trevor Walker. Joe Middleton
a non stop midfielder was left on the substitutes bench. For the
first 10 minutes, Select looked a shadow of the side that had so
comprehensively beaten Royal Mail last week. But this was compensated
by the fact that Sangha had introduced a couple of new faces to
the fold. Even though Select did not seem at their best, they managed
to restrict JJB to very little in terms of goal scoring opportunities.
As the first half wore on, you could visibly see the Select team
growing in confidence, as all the players began to get a feel for
the game and each others style of play. It was only a matter of
time before they would score, and the goal dually came via the right
foot of twice Golden Boot winner John Cairns. 1-0 at the break.
The second half turned into a one sided affair. After five minutes
Sangha replaced Paul Lawton with Joe Middleton. The change saw Select
step up a gear and JJB had no answer for the wave after wave of
attacks that rained down on them. The final score of 5-0 could well
have been far higher had the JJB goal keeper not managed to pull
of some stunning saves, especially from John Cairns and Simon Williams.
A special mention has to go to the Man of the Match, Mark Lawton.
Lawton is rapidly becoming one of the most influential players on
the Select team. His composure on the ball is fantastic to see.
The key reason for Select's rise to prominence this season is without
doubt the wing play of both Mark Lawton down the left and Simon
Williams down the right. With John Cairns to finish off the moves,
it explains how Select have scored 15 goals in their last three
games. Next up Sporting Redhouse in the SFL Cup.

Big names out as shocks dominate Round 2.
Tyne Port 5 CDS Security 1
Official Man-of-the-Match: Phil McNerney (Tyne Port)
Tyne Port went into this game full of confidence after a much improved
performance against Sporting Redhouse in their previous game. The
confidence clearly showed, as Tyne Port dominated the first half
to lead by four goals at the interval. Man of the match McNerney
continued his impressive run of form with three goals inside the
first 10 minutes, while Dixon also converted to put the game seemingly
out of reach. The second half saw Monaghan add an early goal to
make it 5-0, just when CDS seemed to be coming back into the game.
Further pressure on the CDS goal went un-rewarded, as good defending
and some outstanding goalkeeping kept the Tyne Port offence at bay.
CDS gained a consolation goal with five minutes remaining, but the
game was already long out of reach. An excellent all-round performance
reflected by the result

BHD Windows 2 Toddy’s 0
Official Man-of-the-Match: John Maughan (Toddy’s)
With BHD decimated with injuries, nobody expected them to pull off
such an emphatic win. Tommy Wilkinson had to be put into defence
in a makeshift side. The first half was a dull affair with both
teams cancelling each other out. The second, however was a completely
different affair. BHD piled the pressure on the opposition goal
only for the goalkeeper to pull off several exceptional saves until
new signing John Maughan cracked the ball into the bottom corner
of the net to make it 1-0 to BHD. Toddy’s tried to fight back
but BHD kept on winning the ball in defence and catching Toddy’s
on the break. It wasn’t long before BHD went 2-0 up with another
well-taken goal from John Maughan. It could have turned into a rout
against Toddy’s if it wasn’t for a brilliant display
from their goalkeeper, who time and time again saved the ball in
several one-on-one situations. All in all another amazing result
for BHD Manager, John Nicholson, who appears to be doubling up as
a “reluctant” ‘keeper in both BHD’s wins.

LEAGUE GAME
Slipway 3 Herrenknecht 0
Official Man-of-the-Match: Paul Anthony Mooney (Slipway)
Despite an excellent result allied with an exceptional performance
against Crown Electrics in their previous game, Herrenknecht simply
did not learn. Losing Chris Garrett in goal was rectified by Sangha
being an adequate replacement and also Mitchell as sole stopper
in defence. The remainder of the team was the same. John Hunt, as
ever, marshalled the team, Baines and Wilson alongside him.
The first few minutes were promising. Competent saves made by Stephen
Keith for Slipway thwarted the Herrenknecht attack as chances came
on regular occasions. A mistake, though, bought it all back to square
one for Herrenknecht. Mitchell lost Melvin Keith who stole in for
the opening goal. A further two goals followed from Oliver and Dove.
Ironically in his team talk, Manager Sangha identified these three
as key players to watch out for. But the team took no heed, lack
of involvement in defending was probably the reason for the defeat.
Slipway weren’t much better than Herrenknecht on the night
but then when has that ever made a difference to results.
It was generally decided by Sangha at half time that this team simply
could not go on. The capitulation against Sporting in the opening
game alongside this result against Slipway meant there were and
had to be major changes for Herrenknecht. The first main change
was John Hunt jumping a relegation bound team to join the relatively
calm atmosphere of Tarnjit Sangha’s Select Interiors, as it
seems these days that Tarnjit Sangha’s teams are havens for
ex-Herrenknecht personnel – Anthony Richardson, Trevor Walker,
Graham Smith, Gary Davison and now John Hunt (although most of the
players were playing for Herrenknecht on a temporary basis). This
was a disappointment for Sangha as he re-arranged his team times
for Hunt and also awarded him the Captaincy on merit rather than
for show. Baines, another Season 1 and 2 original was simply not
interested. The impending signing (but not 100% confirmed) of Anth
Langan was probably the major cause of Hunt leaving (despite his
assertions that it wasn’t), but Langan could bring some fresh
ideas to a stagnant, relegation bound team. Huitson has already
been called up from Bassenthwaite to “fill in” for one
game, the cup encounter next week v ALS as Langan is cup tied, and
Sangha is scouring the teams in the League and beyond for a new
player. It seems that Michael Booth will make a solitary return
to the team to partner Sangha in defence just to attempt to get
past ALS. Gavin Wilson, Huitson and Stephen Wilson will be attacking.
No rush though, this time the player has to fit in to a new more
skilful Herrenknecht side with more emphasis on passing the ball
rather than beating every player twice on the pitch when the chips
are down. To look on the positive side: Stephen Wilson is apparently
content to stay now (for the moment anyway) after being disillusioned
with 6-a-side in general. Gavin Wilson will probably remain in Davinder
Sangha’s team for the rest of his footballing days. Chris
Garrett also wants to stay in the team. The future doesn’t
look to bad as the Herrenknecht team have lost major players in
the past and always survived – and now Sangha isn’t
really tied down by loyalties (apart from Gavin Wilson) and will
aim to bring in a player who will perform for the team instead of
as an individual.

Sporting won 3-2 on penalties

This was a game that many were looking forward to seeing, between
two sides that are regarded as the best, in terms of footballing
ability. Select Player / Manager Tarnjit Sangha yet again changed
his team line up, dropping himself to the bench and starting with
Joe Middleton to partner Graham Smith in defence. The front three
remained the same, Mark Lawton leftwing, Simon Williams rightwing,
with John Cairns in attack. For the second week running, Sporting
were missing influential defender Paul Mouat, like last week they
brought in Michael Duggan who is rapidly proving to be a more than
adequate replacement. The game was an end to end affair with both
sides creating chances. Select took the lead through Cairns, but
Sporting replied through Neil Richardson. The second half, Select
took the game to their opponents, but without Sangha to marshall
the defence, were looking decidedly nervous at the back. Again Select
took the lead, this time through Simon Williams but again a disastrous
defensive mix up allowed Sporting to equalise, this time Sporting
Player/Manager Anthony Richardson capitalising. The final whistle
went leaving the score 2-2, and it was now the lottery of the penalty
shootout. Sporting emerged victorious, winning 3-2, with of all
people Cairns missing the target for Select. However, Select should
not be too worried at the result. No doubt when the league campaign
commences in a fortnights time against Bassenthwaite, Sangha will
have his team back in tune to the way they have been playing in
the league. And with the major new signing of John Hunt from Herrenknecht,
maybe Sangha has finally found the replacement he requires to fill
the boots of the vacated Trevor Walker. We shall see.

This second round repeat of last seasons final proved to be just
as tight an affair. A great many critics had their knives sharpened
at the 'so called' demise of Royal Mail. But as I have said before,
of all the Managers in the SFL, the one man you should never right
off is Jamie Fleming. Royal Mail apart from a few scares, never
looked like they would lose this game. After their mauling at the
hands of Select last time out, what was required tonight was a performance
of steel and character and that is exactly what we got. The shape
of the team was back, everyone knew exactly where they were playing
and the movement, a trait that Royal are renowned for was back.
It was left to last seasons Player of the Year Steven Lawson to
fire in the only goal of the game, and take Royal into the Quarter-finals.
Next up, it's old rivals Sporting Redhouse in the league.

Yet another hugely disappointing night for Toddy's, who in truth
were totally out played by BHD Windows, who themselves are showing
great strides in improvement. Toddy's Player/Manager William Harper
was unavailable, so Assistant and Goalkeeper Dave Arnott took over,
he must have been appalled at his team lack of invention and ideas.
It is clear, the transition from 11-a-side to 6-a-side is proving
to be a lot more difficult than many of the Toddy's players imagined.
William Harper must rapidly halt his teams decline and achieve something
out of his next game. It will not be easy, his opponents are Team
Coulson. Final score tonight was BHD Windows 2 Toddy's 0.
Team Coulson 3 Sex & Chocolate 2
Official Man-of-the-Match: Dave Gourlay (Sex & Chocolate)
What many expected to be the tie of the round, certainly lived up
to all expectations in every sense of the word. A thrilling end
to end cup tie between two sides vying for the claim 'best in the
Division'. Team Coulson took the lead, but Sex & Chocolate soon
equalised through Man of the Match Dave Gourlay. The second half
than really took off. Gourlay put Sex & Chocolate in the lead
with a superb left foot volley that totally deceived the Team Coulson
Player / Manager Danny Coulson in goal. But yet again Danny Coulson's
team equalised. It was at this point that the game erupted into
chaos. A few unsavoury challenges form the S & C players, caused
Team Coulson to react in ways that are unacceptable in football.
Both Mark Kelsey and Sean Hodgson of Team Coulson should have been
sent of for violent conduct, but amazingly stayed on the pitch.
It was clear, that Team Coulson’s strong arm tactics put S
& C right off their game, and Mark Kelsey fired in a fabulous
strike to finish the game 3-2 to Team Coulson. Putting aside all
the controversial incidents, this was a full blooded and intense
cup tie, with both teams showing why they are dominating this Division.
In the race for the Division 2 Title, it's first blood to Team Coulson.

Royal Mail in crisis.

Official Man-of-the-Match: Anth Langan (Sporting Redhouse)
A much anticipated clash between the giants Sporting Redhouse and
Royal Mail was watched more for the possibility of it flaring up
rather than for the football. Anth Langan was the focal point as
he fired in a goal to help his new team put one over Jamie Fleming,
his former Manager. Although its too early to say, Royal Mail are
obviously struggling this Season having only won one game out of
4. The defeat sends the plummeting down the table, as they seem
to have remained stagnant from the brilliant unit which won Season
2. The loss of Langan is without a doubt the reason. 24 goals last
Season helped them to the Title. This season, though, it's getting
harder and harder.

CUP GAME (Round 2)
Herrenknecht 7 ALS 0
Official Man-of-the-Match: Gavin Wilson (Herrenknecht)
A Herrenknecht team in disarray took to the field against ALS. Without
Hunt (jumped) and Baines (pushed), the team were entering a new
era essentially after the aforementioned players were part of the
squad since the team was created. Booth was temporarily transferred
from University being one of the only available players that wasn't
cup tied. Paul Huitson made his final appearance for any team this
season as he was emergency transferred from Bassenthwaite before
moving away.
The game kicked off and immediately Herrenknecht played like a liberated
team. The passing and movement was exceptional and Gavin Wilson
- who was man-of-the-match - played his best game for Herrenknecht
to date. Huitson was a revelation as he passed and moved into dangerous
positions dragging the ALS players with him. 4 goals from Gavin
Wilson, 2 from Huitson and 1 from Stephen Wilson (before he went
off injured after 10 minutes) gave Herrenknecht a perfect scoreline
and performance.
Sangha and Mitchell were rarely troubled in defence and Chris Garrett
made two (and only two) good saves in the game. Booth came on for
Steve Wilson and it must be said cannot believe that he didn't score.
Herrenknecht pushed in the second half and continually attacked
but still retained their pass and move philosophy. Booth, Gavin
and Huitson had several chances which the 'keeper either saved,
hit the goal posts or went slightly wide.
The irony is that without Baines and Hunt, who were watching on
the sidelines along with a surprisingly large crown, Herrenknecht
performed exceptionally well and put on a show...something they
haven't done for a very long time. Granted, ALS had played at 7:30
in a 2-2 draw and were Second Division opposition, but then Herrenknecht
could only beat them and they did that well...

Durham Pine 5 JJB Sports 2
Official Man-of-the-Match: Paul Richardson (Durham Pine)
Durham's revenge game against JJB Sports went according to plan.
A solid performance, again, from Paul Richardson helped them to
an excellent and much needed 5-2 win over the team which seem likely
to be Relegated this Season. Durham now head the table with 3 points
over their nearest rivals.

Royal plunge deeper into obscurity.
Sporting Redhouse 2 Slipway 2
Official Man-of-the-Match: Melvin Keith (Slipway)
The third encounter of the season between these two old rivals proved
to be just as thrilling an affair as the previous two games. Slipway
went into the game with a severely under strength team. Missing
were Joe Dove, Paul Mooney, Paul Anthony Mooney, and Richard Oliver.
Sporting on the other hand were at full strength, with the return
of Paul Mourt. Both sides had just seen Durham Pine defeated for
the first time this season, and knew this was the ideal opportunity
to gain victory and join them at the top of the table. Looking at
the respective line-ups, I’m pretty sure that Stephen Clarke
of the Slipway would have been the more happier to settle for a
draw. Right from the kick off, Sporting went at their opponents
determined to finish them off quickly. But as many teams have found
out to their cost, Slipway are one of the most organised units around
when it comes to defending, and they constantly repelled the Sporting
attacks and themselves looked dangerous on the break. However, Sporting
pressure finally paid off as David Duff put Sporting in the lead.
Sporting then settled down and stared playing the type of football
they have become renowned for, and at this point could have sealed
the game. But Slipway have a knack of raising their game when playing
Sporting, and through Man-of-the-Match Melvin Keith equalised. It
was then Slipways turn to pile on the pressure, but you always got
the feeling that they were prepared to settle for the point, unlike
Sporting who were desperate for the victory. Anthony Langan put
Sporting ahead once again, and everyone thought that would be it,
but some defensive indiscipline once again allowed Melvin Keith
of the Slipway to level the contest. If it had have been for better
finishing from Slipway, they could very well have took all three
points, as Sporting seemed to fall apart once the scores had reached
2-2. At the final whistle you could see the delight on Stephen Clarke’s
face, while Paul Stoker and his team knew they had missed a crucial
chance of stamping their authority on the title race.

Tyne Port 1 Durham Pine 0
Official Man-of-the-Match: Chris Scott (Tyne Port)
A superb result for Tyne Port who look to be getting some much needed
form back after a worrying run. The match itself wasn’t the
best advertisement for football - windy conditions and the commitment
of both sides made for a scrappy game - but the hard earned points
will go a long way to boosting Tyne Port's indifferent start to
the season.
The first half saw McNerney score with one of his trademark goals
- an unstoppable half volley - to take a one goal advantage into
the second half. Tight defensive marking throughout the rest of
the game frustrated both sides, as few chances were created. Cook
in goal did well to push a Durham Pine shot onto the post, while
Dixon should have made it 2-0 with a one-on-one, but dragged the
shot wide. Not the best game of football - both sides can definitely
play better - but Tyne Port felt they shaded the game and deserved
to take the points at the final whistle.

Herrenknecht 6 JJB Sports 2
Official Man-of-the-Match: Gordon Robson (Herrenknecht)
A hastily put together team faced JJB Sports in a crucial game for
Herrenknecht. Gavin Wilson had abandoned the team to move to Team
Coulson leaving only Davinder Sangha and Chris Garrett from the
original Herrenknecht team which essentially underachieved during
the last two seasons. Finishing 2nd and 4th is not good enough for
a team which has a talented nucleus of players. The new team comprised
of Garrett in goal, Sangha and Graham Smith (Select) in defence
along with Lee Francis (ex-Groundwork/Bassenthwaite) and two Division
2 players; Tommy Wilkinson (BHD) and Gordon Robson (Toddy's).
Despite a 0-0 first half Herrenknecht sprung into action immediately
after JJBs had fired themselves into a 1-0 lead. Gordon Robson,
who was performing brilliantly fired in the equaliser. A further
two goals from Robson put Herrenknecht into comfortable 3-1 lead.
A mistake by Sangha put JJB's back in with a slight chance but Robson
killed them off with a further two goals complemented by a final
one from Tommy Wilkinson.
This was an exceptional performance from a team which had never
played together. Since losing the regulars, Herrenknecht have performed
unbelievably well, passing the ball, superb movement, and this from
a team who barely knew each others' names!
The future seems to look good for Herrenknecht. Gordon Robson wants
to sign immediately, Lee Francis seemed to be fitting in to his
role within minutes of starting the game. Stephen Wilson is most
likely back from injury and the possible return of Anthony Richardson
in a complete u-turn is a startling thought. Also the availability
of the likes of Barrie Massey, Steve Sinnott (both through Francis)
makes up the new look Herrenknecht team. And without a doubt, if
Herrenknecht eliminate Sporting in the Quarter Finals in two weeks'
time then it seems that Langan would probably be interested in signing
again....strange things in the wonderful world of Herrenknecht.

Official Man-of-the-Match: John Wardle (Crown Electrics)
The most remarkable thing about the SFL is the way in which teams
appear to rapidly improve as a new Season commences. In Season 2
it was the likes of Groundwork and TCB who improved. Season 3 it
has already seen BHD reach the Quarter Finals of the Cup, Sex &
Chocolate (along with Team Coulson) appearing to be too good for
Division 2. Fergusons winning every other game and in Division 1,
Tyne Port have improved considerably to be considered one of the
favourites.
But then there's Royal Mail. A complete paradox this season. Losing
Langan (as mentioned before) is a key element but then to lose 4-0
to Crown Electrics only a few weeks after eliminating them 1-0,
albeit dominating them 1-0 in the Second Round of the Cup. The defeat,
along with Herrenknecht's win pushes Royal into the Relegation Zone.
Relegation is a distinct possibility now with Crown showing that
they aren't, like most people have said, a guaranteed Relegation
team. Herrenknecht, after casting off the old guard, are another
team which don't look as if they are Relegation fodder. Bassenthwaite
and JJB's are almost certain to go down. But who will join them?
Last Season names such as Herrenknecht, Slipway and Durham were
gleefully being mentioned at Relegation but this Season it seems
unlikely...Whatever happens, we are likely to see a big name team
playing Second Division soccer next Season.

Durham stay ahead.
Tyne Port 6 Royal Mail Sunderland 0
Official Man-of-the-Match: Chris Dixon (Tyne Port)
Tyne Port's impressive run of form continued with an excellent result
against last season's double winners. Though the scoreline may suggest
otherwise, the match was fairly evenly balanced in terms of possession.
Tyne Port took the lead through Dave McLaren after a surging run
from the back, before Dixon added two more before the interval.
Shortly after half time, Monaghan added the fourth, fed by an excellent
through ball from Ross. Substitute McNerney hit the fifth while
Dixon completed his hat-trick to make the final score 6-0. Ed Cook
produced a number of excellent saves as Royal Mail played some excellent
football in the second half, but the damage had already been inflicted.
Next week Tyne Port face the ultimate test in the shape of Tarnjit
Sangha's Select, when we will see just how far the team has come
after the recent resurgence.

Durham 4 Herrenknecht 1
Official Man-of-the-Match: Paul Richardson (Durham)
Despite the 4-1 scoreline, Herrenknecht could take something from
this evenly matched game. True Durham finished their chances, whereas
Herrenknecht had their chances but were either thwarted by an excellent
performance by Alfie Turner, or just shaved the post and cross bar.
A new front line (again) probably hampered Herrenknecht, Steve Sinnott,
an excellent acquisition from the now moribund but spectacular Groundwork
team from Season 2 came in for his first game for several months.
A good chance was missed by him which could have turned the game,
but as a tried, tested and proven scorer in the SFL he is bound
to produce the goods. Gordon Robson had another good, but more difficult
game. Team selection was a bit of a disaster for Sangha as he played
three cautious players in himself, the brilliant Graham Smith and
Lee Francis, who put in some excellent tackles during the game.
Paul Richardson, despite getting the Man-of-the-Match award failed
to get on the score sheet for Durham - but they proved they weren't
a one man army as Paul Thompson scored two excellent drives and
Gettins added one which was suspiciously inside the faded goalkeepers
area. The scoreline probably reflects why Durham are top. They took
their chances whilst Herrenknecht rued their missed opportunities.
Losing 1-0 at half time, the tiring Sinnott went off for Wilson
who was just back from injury. Desperation after going a further
two goals down to 3-0 led to some unnecessary long balls - which
everyone was guilty of in the Herrenknecht team, but the Herrenknecht
team didn't lose confidence or work rate which the old team would
have done and which resulted in a fine goal for Stephen Wilson,
albeit a consolation, to end the game at 4-1. The rapidly icing
pitch didn't help but luckily there were no injuries, only more
players losing their balances. A fine win for Durham who were actually
lacking in confidence after back to back loses and a disappointment
but not to much for Herrenknecht who now have major back-to-back
games against Sporting Redhouse starting next week.

Official Man-of-the-Match: Paul Burn (JJB Sports)
With Player / Manager Paul Stoker missing, it was left up to Anthony
Richardson to play the part of Goalkeeper in this encounter. Sporting
were expected to overcome the opposition of JJB Sports with ease
but as the night unfolded, it was anything but that. Sporting spurned
chance after chance during the first half, with the JJB Sports Goalkeeper
matching anything that was thrown at him. At the other end, stand
in keeper, Richardson was coming to the rescue when need arose.
At the interval, both team were at level at 0-0. During the second
half, the pattern remained the same. Sporting were throwing everything
at JJB, who themselves were looking ever more dangerous on the counter-attack.
Sporting knew this was a game they must win if they were to maintain
their challenge for the Title. The goal finally came due to some
excellent wing play by David Duff as he set up Anthony Langan for
an easy tap in. You could visibly see the Sporting team breathe
a sigh of relief. The favourites were expected to go on from this
and maybe add to the one goal, but amazingly the much feared complacency
set in and JJB’s managed to equalise. The game looked like
it was going to end honours even, when with less than five minutes
left, Sporting snatched what at the time looked as if it was going
to be the winning goal. JJB Sports were visibly distraught, and
it showed in their play, with just a minute left Sporting found
another goal and made the game safe at 3-1. It was not a very convincing
performance by Sporting, but at the moment, all that matters is
that they win games and keep the pressure on league leaders Durham
Pine. That much they are doing.

Tyne Port hold Select. Herrenknecht revenge
against Sporting

Official Man-of-the-Match: John Cairns (Select)
The two form teams came head to head in a thrilling end to end clash,
with both sides buzzing after impressive wins last week. The teams
playing styles contrasted to make for a very open game, Tyne Ports
quick counter-attacking against Selects all out offensive. The first
half saw Select immediately on the offensive, but Cook stood firm
to deny the opposition. The defence soaked up the pressure while
good counter attacking created chances at the other end. Dixon was
denied by the post before McNerney put his side ahead with a well
taken goal. Select equalised from a bizarre McLaren clearance, which
somehow ended up in his own net, before McNerney restored the lead.
More chances followed - with Dixon again denied by the post - to
leave the score 2-1 at half time. As expected, Select threw everything
at the Tyne Port goal in the second half, but outstanding defending
from McLaren and Ross limited the chances on goal. When required,
Cook did not disappoint, pulling off a string of superb saves. McNerney
was everywhere - as always a constant threat - until he went off
injured in the last five minutes, while Monaghan and Dixon worked
tirelessly in midfield, until Select finally equalised from a penalty
in the dying seconds of the game.
On the balance of play, a draw was probably the fairest result for
both sides, but Tyne Port felt hard done by with the late penalty
decision. Already down to five men, this was a bitter blow for Tyne
Port who had defended heroically in the closing stages. But, as
the old saying goes - that’s football.

Herrenknecht 2 Sporting Redhouse 1
Official Man-of-the-Match: Stephen Wilson (Herrenknecht)
The irony of the situation was that Tyne Port had just held out
Sporting in a heroic stand which left them with only 4 walking outfield
players - Durham weren't playing and Slipway had also surprisingly
lost against a young and enthusiastic Bassenthwaite team. Sporting
were expected to go top with ease. And with a full strength squad
against a Herrenknecht team which had suffered a recent defeat.
No one gave Herrenknecht any hope....a similar situation to the
titanic clash in Season 2
Herrenknecht put out a team similar to the last one which was defeated
by Durham 4-1. This time though all caution was thrown to the win.
Sangha decided to abandon the man-to-man, catering for the opposition
tactics which had served the team so well during the latter half
of Season 2, in favour of simple defending with two stoppers and
three attackers. Wilson, Robson and Francis behind were the attacking
force. Smith and Sangha held the back.
In a high powered game, Sporting were pegged back. Their best line
up with Langan and Richardson along with Mouat and Duff were pressured
heavily by Robson and Wilson. A deserved opening goal came in from
a superb header from Smith. Lax marking led to Langan equalising
just before half time to set up an electric second half. Vicious
but hilarious in fighting from the Sporting team now boasting Neil
Richardson on with Anthony Richardson and Langan was doubled up
with Gordon Robson goading Paul Mouat constantly - an argument which
stemmed from a recent 11-a-side game where Wilson and Robson were
opponents to Mouat and Langan. Francis also popped in on the act
with aggressive marking which was dealt with by a warning from Mickey
Frater who handled the situation superbly. Robson was lucky not
to receive a yellow card for kicking the ball away and Sangha also
began to pour hot oil over the simmering arguments between Anthony
Richardson and Langan.
Wilson's shot hit the crossbar in the dying moments as the game
looked to be heading to a 1-1 draw when up popped Francis, of all
people to receive a delicate back heel from man-of-the-match Wilson
to almost caress the ball past the hapless Stoker in goal. A brilliant
win which ended Sporting's unbeaten run, an amazing run which started
off with a 4-0 thumping over Herrenknecht. Revenge is so sweet.

Bassenthwaite 4 Slipway 2
Official Man-of-the-Match: Stephen Jackson (Bassenthwaite)
A slightly changed Bassen side went into their second game under
new management against a Slipway team renowned for it's defensive
stubbornness yet still littered with quality up front in the shape
of Melvin Keith who
grabbed a brace. Bassen new that anything else other than a win
would virtually guarantee 2nd Division football. Going into the
game the game plan was to be patient and try to break down the Slipway
side slowly and ensure that any counter attacks didn't cost an already
huge goals against column. Bassen started the game brightly but
just couldn't break down the Slipway who grabbed the first goal.
Bassen could only keep on passing the ball and
keep on making the ever tiring Slipway run and chase. Their tiredness
seemed to show when Bassen grabbed two superbly taken goals through
Stephen Jackson. Bassen's game plan was simply to keep it tight
and only a terrible error form an otherwise unbelievably good Chris
Conifey in goal let Keith have an empty net. 2-2 with about 10 minutes
remaining. Slipway threw on a lively Joe Dove who's running ability
with the ball caused Bassen's defence a few problems. His effort
were to no avail, though as defender Ryan MacNaught avoided a nose
bleed to tuck away a third Bassen goal. The goal of the game was
still to come though as Stephen Jackson secured his hat-trick. With
his back towards goal and approximately 20 yards out Jackson had
the ball played to his feet. Chipping it up on to his favoured left
foot and, turning his marker, he smashed an unstoppable volley into
the bottom corner securing the points to Bassen. It will be interesting
to see if this Bassenthwaite side can avoid the dreaded "R"
word.

Select 3 Royal Mail 2
Official Man-of-the-Match: Mark Lawton (Select)
Select went into the game knowing that with Durham not playing,
a victory would take them to top of the table for the first time
this season. Royal Mail knew that a defeat against the title favourites
would leave them with a very difficult task of retaining their Division
1 status. The first half was totally dominated by Select. Their
razor sharp passing and movement kept the reigning Champions on
a constant back foot. It was no surprise therefore to see Select
go in at the halftime interval two goals up. John Cairns and eventual
Man-of-the-Match Mark Lawton being the goal scorers. The second
half started in very similar fashion to the first. Select were constantly
driving forward in search of more goals. Lawton and Williams down
the wings were proving to be a consistent thorn in the champions
side. John Hunt who now adopts a more central defensive position
in the Select team, was continuously breaking up the Royal Mail
attacks, while Sole defender Tarnjit sangha was playing his role
with sufficient ease. It wasn’t until the dual second half
substitution by Royal Mail Manager Jamie Fleming that the champions
finally began to show some fight in the game, in particular the
new signing of Neil Richardson from Sporting Redhouse. As soon as
Richardson came on, the Champions began to show some spirit and
belief in themselves. Royal actually started to cause the Title
favourites some problems, with Richardson and Boylan being the major
antagonists. Two quick goals brought the game back to 3-2. but it
was too much too late for the champions. In fairness, it would have
been unfair on Select if they had not took all three points from
this encounter. They had numerous opportunities to kill the game
off, but a mixture of good goal-keeping and bad finishing kept the
score to a minimum. For Royal Mail there is much they can take from
this game. The introduction of Neil Richardson and his subsequent
pairing with Michael Boylan in attack, could well have found the
answer to their chronic goal-scoring problems. Only time will tell.
As for Select, they are finally top of the table. Now it remains
to be seen whether they really have the ability to stay there. The
same applies to Select as it does for Royal, only time will tell.

It was common knowledge two weeks ago that Phil McNerney, one of
the players of the season so far, would not be playing against Herrenknecht.
Before the game Tyne Port were struggling to find a full complement
of players, but eventually managed to put a team out against Herrenknecht
with Darren Duggan replacing (albeit on a temporary basis) McNerney.
It seemed to have worked....Dixon fired in the opening shot after
20 seconds straight from kick off. Tyne Port, expert at defending
simply had to sit on that lead and then counterattack. The "old"
Herrenknecht would have crumbled and lost heat but the "new"
team immediately replied with Wilson firing in an unstoppable shot
to equalise. From then on it was all Herrenknecht. Chances were
created and either missed or saved. Smith ran the whole length of
the field, as Tyne Port were busy cancelling Robson and Wilson out,
to fire in a superb goal. Wilson scored a further goal to end the
game as a contest at 3-1 and Robson scored at the death to give
Herrenknecht a superb result. A brilliant performance from the whole
team. Lee Francis played his best so far, even better than against
Sporting. He won almost every tackle in the middle of the park and
created several superb chances for Robson and Wilson. Smith at the
back controlled everything and kept the team going, along with scoring
a superb individual goal. And then Robson and Wilson, clearly two
lethal attackers who are combining exceptionally well. Any difficult
ball was soon brought under control and used well. Royal Mail are
up next and with Sinnott rejoining as an attacker alongside Wilson,
Robson and Smith with Francis in defence, a positive result is expected.

Royal Mail, back on track?
Royal Mail 1 Herrenknecht 0
Official Man-of-the-Match: Neil Richardson (Royal)
A below par performance from an overconfident Herrenknecht, allied
with a solid performance from Royal Mail led to an inevitable 1-0
defeat. Their stop start season yet again grinds to a stop. Despite
the result, Herrenknecht's defensive performance was okay without
Sangha as stopper. Only this time the attack inexplicably failed
to strike the target despite extensive domination in the first half.
The game did not see much skill and invention apart from the superb
Royal Mail goal scored by Neil Richardson, who seemingly has returned
from a long exile at Slipway - then Sporting, now back to his original
Royal Mail team. Royal Manager Jamie Fleming was forced to go in
goal to solve his teams goalkeeping crisis, but was rarely tested.
Stephen Wilson and Sinnott along with Robson showed some signs of
gelling together as an attacking force, but Robson turned cautious
during the game which saw him at times behind Graham Smith and Lee
Francis. Ironically, Herrenknecht collectively defended well, nobody
really lost a challenge, but as mentioned, a distinct lack of shooting
at the obviously nervous Fleming was criminal. Back to square one
for Herrenknecht who have a crucial Cup Quarter Final against Sporting,
but an excellent opportunity for Royal Mail to now go on a run against
Slipway next week. Personally as Manager of Herrenknecht and viewing
Royal Mail's team, I think a win against Slipway is likely. If in
any event that Royal fail to beat Slipway, they will struggle and
probably be Relegated, as it seems that all the teams in the bottom
section seem to be pushing upwards, including Bassenthwaite and
Herrenknecht. So if Royal win, the other teams will keep on winning
- a 6 point gap at this stage seems quite big. Even teams such as
the Slipway and Tyne Port could be sucked in to Relegation. A prime
example is that Herrenknecht could have gone third with a win, yet
now they are back in Relegation trouble in 6th place. Their own
fault really. There also seems to be a bit of a rift between the
new players coming in and the existing players. The fact remains,
that as manager, if I see any in-fighting or over criticism, then
players will be dropped – even if it causes us to be relegated.

Select 3 Slipway 1

Select v Slipway was expected to be a tempestuous affair and that
is exactly the way it turned out to be. Select introduced Mark Banks
to make his debut in place of Simon Williams who was out with a
groin strain. While Paul Mooney Jnr returned for Slipway in place
of Joe Dove. Right from the kick off, Select’s quick passing
and movement tore through the Slipway rear-guard with ease, but
as has been the continually growing problem for the Title favourites,
a whole host of chances were wasted. Slipways were left to shooting
from long distance and very rarely troubled Gary Davison in goal
for Select. But in the SFL you are punished for not taking your
chances, and Select found that out to their cost when with just
five minutes to go in the first half Slipway went a goal ahead after
an uncharacteristic piece of indecision by Select player/Manager
Tarnjit Sangha in defence. This was a trait that would dog Sangha
throughout the game. However, there is no team in the SFL that creates
as many chances per game then Select. This attribute means that
Select will eventually score if they persist at their game, and
duly the goal came via terrific passing move that involved the whole
team only to be finished of with a wonderful strike by eventual
hat-trick man and Man-of-The-Match Mark Banks. The second half kept
the same flow as the first, with Select constantly on the attack
and Slipway occasionally threatening on the break. With around seven
minutes to go Select went ahead, again through Mark Banks, who now
seemed to be revelling in his free role. It was from this point
on that matters got a little out of hand. A few harsh challenges
and niggling fouls by both sides turned the game nasty, with one
particularly incident involving Select’s Mark Lawton and Slipway’s
Paul Mooney Jnr resulting in yellow cards for both players. They
were lucky; the cards could have quite easily been red. The last
few minutes of the game didn’t seem to have any shape. It
seemed as if Select had settled for the 2-1 score line, while Slipway
could not seem to find the invention to break down the Select defence.
Just to rub salt into the Slipway wounds, Banks rounded off his
impressive debut with a stunning shot that left Slipway’s
gaol keeper with no chance at all.
It was a strange performance from Select. Cairns, Sangha and Lawton
all while playing well, seemed to be below par, especially since
they have set so high standards for themselves. Banks was superb,
while Keeper Davison has yet to put a foot or should I say hand
wrong. Biggest complement of the night had to go to John Hunt. Over
the last few games, I have seen a great intelligence come into his
game. One of the key reasons why Slipway had so few efforts on goal
was more due to his endeavours, then Sangha playing his usual competent
and authoritarian role at the back. Hunt is rapidly becoming a major
force in the Select side. I knew I made the right decision to sign
him.

Crown Electrics 2 Durham Pine 1

After seeing Select go clear at the top of the SFL, Durham knew
they also had to win and make sure they kept the pressure on the
leaders. Player/Manager Brian Gettins had a full complement of players
to choose from, thus enforcing his intentions of what was expected.
Crown who themselves are now serious ‘dark horses’ as
Title challengers came into the game knowing that a victory against
their more fancied opponents would really propel them into the Championship
reckoning. The key for Durham as always would be the performance
of striker and leading goal scorer Paul Richardson. Whereas for
Crown, any of the front three of Sean Forrest, Gary Rolls and John
Wardle could pose a threat.
From the off, you could see this was going to be an entertaining
game. Crown play in a very similar fashion to Select, where the
emphasis is on attack. Durham play an all the more defensive game
where Richardson plays the role of lone striker with the support
of Gettins who sits just behind him. Durham went at their opponents
from the off and immediately seemed to knock Crown off their balance.
Richardson was proving to be a constant threat, and duly scored
to put Durham into the lead. But instead of taking control of proceedings,
Durham even though going a goal ahead seemed to hand the initiative
to Crown. For the next twenty or so minutes Crown took the game
to Durham, and created numerous chances only to be thwarted by splendid
goal keeping by Alfie Turner in the Durham goal. But eventually
Crown got what they deserved and equalised. Brilliant counter-attacking
by Crown had Durham looking decidedly nervous. Even Paul Richardson
was looking subdued. But this was all down to the tactics of Crown.
With just five minutes to go Crown took what was to be a decisive
lead. Durham were shattered. They piled forward in vain, but this
only led to more razor sharp counters by Crown. Again if it had
not been for excellent goal keeping by turner in the Durham goal,
the score could well have been a lot higher. The final whistle went
and Durham knew that this 2-1 defeat could well have major repercussions
when the final standings come to be. We will see

Bassenthwaite 6 JJB Sports 1

Bassenthwaite came into this game off the back of a very disappointing
defeat against the Slipway despite having gone 2-0 up at half time.
Added to this was the fact that earlier on in the night, their closest
relegation rivals, Royal Mail had won. However any lack of confidence
was soon cleared out of the system with a
performance that left JJB reeling. Bassenthwaite dominated the game
in terms of possession, skill and ability and despite this seemingly
massive scoreline JJB must have felt lucky it wasn't more. Bassen
must have missed about 20 clear cut chances with a combination of
outstanding goalkeeping, and poor finishing keeping the scoreline
as little as it was. In fairness to JJB, poor defending and the
occasional good move did leave them with a number of chances, most
of which they squandered. It was Bassen that made the brighter start
and quickly went 2-0 with two superb strikes from the brilliant
Stephen Jackson. He scored 4 in this game taking his goalscoring
tally to 11 goals in just 4 games. After going into this lead though,
JJB quickly pulled one back through a calm, if not scuffed finish
by Cuddy. JJB could have got the equaliser, when good play from
Alan Burn left him one-on-one with Bassen keeper Chris Conifey.
Conifey, who had little to do all game showed the form that will
prove him to be one of the best keepers in this league. He pounced
on a powerful strike, leaving JJB frustrated and Bassen relieved.
From there on in there were no more slip ups and Bassen comfortable
secured the win with a further 4 goals, as there opponents tired
leaving massive gaps. A vital win for Bassen, with a feeling that
they can still play better. All credit to the referee, Mr Frater
who had a great game.

The impossible task of taking Bassen away from the relegation zone
now looks a distinct possibility after a superb, ground out result
against a very strong Durham side. Like last week, Bassen went into
the game knowing that their closest rivals had once again won, meaning
nothing less than a victory would suffice for Bassen. However rather
than disappoint the young Bassen side, Royal Mail's victory seemed
to spur them on, resulting in a performance of both grit and determination
but also littered with skill and superb passing and movement. Bassen's
tactics were simply to frustrate Pine with constant scurrying pressure
whenever they had the ball in remotely dangerous areas and then
hit them with the plethora of skill they possess, whenever possible.
Early on in the game Pine seemed to be having the majority of possession
without causing any problems to Bassen keeper Chris Conifey. Bassen
battled for the ball and after their first attack, they produced
their first shot and went one-nil up thanks to a cool Chris Haldane
finish. This was very pleasing to a side that in the previous week
has missed close to 20 clear-cut opportunities despite running out
6-1 winners. The next ten minutes of the game left little opportunity
for either side as both sides, despite playing superb football,
seemed to cancel each other out. However after a short period of
possession, Pine equalised with a superb 20 yard drilled shot that
found the bottom corner. With the teams looking to go into half
time all square the ever lively Stephen Jackson produced a moment
of magic that left a Pine defender and the goalkeeper flat footed
and only able to watch the ball roll into the back of the net. Half
time, Bassen 2-1 up. The second half continued in the same vain
as the first, with Bassen working far harder than Pine to get the
ball back when they didn't have it, and then using the ball slightly
better, when they did. It was this brilliant tactical strategy than
enabled Bassen to get a further 2 goals in the shape, (yet again)
of Stephen Jackson, who despite playing in fewer games than most
is already up their with the top scorers in the league. A great
nights work for Bassen who must maintain such form and effort to
get clear of the 3 team cut off mark.

Just a few weeks ago this tie was expected to be a major title decider
with both teams at the time striding away at the top of the table.
However when the two sides met, there was only one team that looked
anything like title challengers. Select stormed to a 4-0 win without
Durham ever looking like they were going to cause them any problems.
Paul Richardson and Gary Ramsay were missing for Durham and if ever
their team needed them it was for this encounter. It took just 2
minutes for Select to take the lead when Simon Williams lashed in
a long distance drive that left the keeper with little chance. From
there on in it was one-way traffic for the remainder of the game.
Select created chances after chance as Durham were left reeling
by some of the football that was being played by their opponents.
Stephen Wilson making his debut for his new team fitted into the
system with absolute ease, and confirmed this by scoring two excellent
goals to make it 3-0 for the league leaders. It was left to Man-of-the-Match
Simon Williams to hammer what could be the final nail into Durham’s
title ambitions by making the final score 4-0. And all this, with
Player/Manager Tarnjit Sangha, sitting this one out on the sideline.
John Hunt playing his new role as sole defender made sure that the
presence of Sangha was not missed at all. I don’t know whether
I should be happy or not

This quarter-final clash saw Team Coulson, the only side with a
100% record take on an unpredictable Tyne Port. Having played only
one competitive game in nearly two months, Tyne Port were may peoples
underdogs to a Team Coulson side who had so far swept away all opposition.
In a game played in farcical weather conditions, both sides struggled
to control the ball in the first half. Tyne Port had most of the
early possession and were rewarded when McLaren finished well from
a quickly taken free kick. As expected, the longer the game went
on, Team Coulson piled on the pressure but could not break down
a resilient Tyne Port. Cook was faultless in goal, producing some
top drawer saves when required, while the back line of McLaren and
Ross stood firm. The lead was doubled midway into the second half
after a good run from the hard working Scott let Dixon in to steer
the ball home. Team Coulson pressed until the end searching for
a way back into the game, but could not find a way through the Tyne
Port defence. A hard earned result and a good, solid performance
from Tyne Port.

The achievement of the Herrenknecht team to propel itself into the
Semi Finals of the 3rd SFL Cup must not be underestimated. Only
Robson, Sangha and Garrett remained from the first team regulars
and only Garrett and Sangha remained from the original Season 1
Herrenknecht team.
Francis and Sinnott had 11-a-side duties, Smith was Cup Tied, Huitson
was unavailable and Stephen Wilson had left the team to join Select
who were, coincidentally, flying high in Division 1. In came Massey
who was scheduled to play in the team when the Quarter Finals were
last due to be played and also new players Joe Thompson and Darren
Duggan. Duggan had been on the end of a 4-1 defeat whilst standing
in for Tyne Port against, ironically, Herrenknecht, but was the
current Manager of the Stadium News team in the CNFL, whereas Thompson
had never played in the League before.
As for Sporting, they were back to full strength after a 1-0 defeat
v Crown in the League. Langan and Richardson were back but they
did have a suspect, stand in goalkeeper, who was immediately exposed
by Thompson, who fired in a long distance shot just inside the half
way circle. Sporting began to pressure the Herrenknecht defence,
but then Robson gave away a penalty by inexplicably stepping in
the area when there was no pressure on him at all. Langan duly dispatched
the penalty to make it 1-1. The game then mirrored the pattern of
the original game with Sporting have all the play in the middle
and final third whilst Herrenknecht looked increasingly dangerous
on the break . Barry Massey had a superb game as an isolated front
man. It was Massey who put Herrenknecht ahead again with a shot
from an obscene angle to set Herrenknecht on their way to the Semi
Finals. Sporting pressured and pressured but Sangha and Garrett
pushed everything back in desperation. Sangha earned his first ever
Man-of-the-Match award for an unbelievable performance considering
Smith and/or Francis weren't there to support in the duties.
The Herrenknecht squad now prepares to face Royal Mail, the current
Holders in the Semi-Finals. The team has the opportunity to put
out the winners after eliminating season 1 winners Sporting. Tyne
Port are now considered favourites having beaten Team Coulson in
the other Quarter Final by 2-0. Coulson's, arrogant and overrated
were found out by what are supposedly a mediocre Division 1 team
as Trevor Walker failed to hit the back of the net. BHD face Tyne
Port after a surprise 5-0 win over Kail. Yet again, Kail failed
to score as they were beaten by University only the week before.
Royal were the luckiest of the bunch. Arguments over whether Neil
Richardson (who was cup tied for Sporting) could play affected the
team as they went 2-0 down. They did manage to claw it back to 3-3
to gain a penalty win over Lance Roberts who gave it away.
So despite the lack of Durham Pine, Select, Sporting, Crown and
Slipway, the Semi Finals do boast big names in Herrenknecht, Royal
Mail, the current holders and Tyne Port, with BHD the definite joker
in the pack. Unbelievable from BHD who are outside the Play-Off
zone at the moment but having finished bottom last season, John
Nicholson has taken over the Managerial responsibilities from Leigh
Devaney to propel the team to previously unreachable heights. But
with the likes of Tommy Wilkinson back in the fold they have in
the team a Division 1 player to complement the regulars.

Hero of the day was Dave McGrath by saving two penalties in the
shoot out in a match played in horrendous conditions. 3-1 down with
5 minutes remaining Royal Mail made a tremendous comeback to win
on penalties.

The obvious excuse would be that Herrenknecht didn't really have
their set line up. No Massey, Sinnott, Francis, Smith, etc. etc.
But then they walked off the pitch after a 3-2 defeat v Bassenthwaite
in disbelief that they didn't come away with anything after the
game. Despite being overrun in the first half, the team took a more
aggressive, intimidating approach (something Herrenknecht are not
really known for). It worked, Bassenthwaite were clearly rattled
and on another day would have surely been heavily defeated. A constant
stream of chances were spurned, either by bad finishing or fortuitous
saves by the Bassenthwaite 'keeper, who cleary wasn't their first
choice. The longer the game went on - the more obvious it was that
Herrenknecht were going to lose. After what must have been the 10th
clear opportunity, Bassenthwaite scored on the break to make it
3-1. Ironically Herrenknecht did score through Robson near the end
but it was all in vain. Chris Garrett in the Herrenknecht goal pulled
off some remarkable saves, again, but was clearly let down by his
attackers. Sangha also played considerably well. Joe Thompson pulled
a hamstring late in the first but actually stepped up a gear in
the second despite being mainly immobile. The Duggan brothers, Gary
and Darren also did well. The first half threatened to become an
onslaught but the team gelled together in the second and probably
created more chances and movement than any Herrenknecht team had
done this season. A bad result though, Herrenknecht are hovering
above the Relegation Line and with player shortages, due to work,
11-a-side fixture clashes and niggling injuries, it's seems they
along with JJB's are almost certain to be Relegated.

A dominating Semi Final win over Herrenknecht, a game which would
have ended much earlier had it not been for some spectacular saves
by Chris Garrett in the Herrenknecht goal, led to another Final
appearance for Royal Mail. Herrenknecht were a bit unlucky in the
end as Darren Duggan hit the post with a shot in the final seconds,
but overall it would have been an injustice to Royal Mail who did
so well to get through. Tyne Port had the luxury of facing 2nd Division
opposition all the way to the Final. A 5-1 win over CDS followed
by an excellent 2-0 win over the “unbeatable” Team Coulson
finished with a 3-1 win over BHD in the Semi Finals. BHD actually
opened the scoring through a penalty but failed to hold on and were,
as expected, eliminated.
The Final was a very tight affair. Normally goal shy Michael Boylen
put Royal ahead in the first as they took control of the game and
retained possession far better than Tyne Port. It seemed that another
1-0 win was on the cards until Chris Scott took advantage of a clear
opportunity to equalise. It was then Tyne’s turn to attack.
Chris Dixon had at least two excellent chances to put Tyne Port
ahead but failed to find the target. In the dying minutes, Royal
won a free kick just outside the Tyne Port area and ever present
Michael Boylen made no mistake as he fired in the lay off. An outstanding
end to an excellent Cup Series. A Cup where all the major names
were knocked out. Slipway were eliminated by Sporting who then made
themselves the favourites by eliminating Select on penalties. A
surprise 2-1 defeat against Herrenknecht in the Quarter Finals put
Sporting out and forced their team to disband. Durham were eliminated
by Lance Roberts who were on course for a Semi Final place after
leading Royal 3-1. But Royal clawed it back to win on penalties
to face Herrenknecht in the Semi’s. The other favourites,
Team Coulson were “found out” by Tyne Port in a 2-0
Quarter Final defeat. But by far the surprise team in the competition
was BHD. A brilliant 2-0 win over Toddy’s in Round 2 was followed
by an emphatic 5-1 win over Kail in the Quarters. The inevitable
defeat in the Semi Finals in no way overshadows their achievement.
Next season there will be two cup competitions in force. One which
finishes in the middle of the season and one which finishes near
the end.
A couple of very important results in both Divisions. In Division
1, Bassenthwaite pulled out of the Relegation Zone after a fine
3-1 win over a new look Sporting team. All the old hands from Sporting,
Duff, Langan, Richardson, etc, finally left the team after the disappointing
2-1 Quarter Final defeat v Herrenknecht and it’s now left
in Paul Stoker’s hands to bring in his own players. No pressure
on Stoker, however, as remaining in Division 1 for Sporting would
be a bonus. A possible drop into Division 2 seems likely but then
it’s fresh start for his team. In Division 2, it seems as
if the “major” signing of Langan hasn’t gone too
well. A resurgent Redhouse WMC defeated them 2-1, this despite Christian
Baines opening the scoring. Stewart Wright hit 2 goals for Redhouse
to put them in the Play-Off reckoning with a 3 point cushion over
ALS

Bassenthwaite: the in form team.
In Division 1, Herrenknecht continue to stumble into the Relegation
Zone with a truly disastrous 3-0 defeat against Slipway. The disaster
was that Slipway had only 5 players. A superb free-kick from Michael
Mooney followed by two goals from Melvin Keith condemned Herrenknecht
– who, again, had numerous opportunities but failed to take
them. Select punished the new look Sporting team 6-1 in an unsurprising
result, but the game which mattered more to them was the Bassenthwaite
– Crown game. In form Bassenthwaite punished the Crown team
with a superb 3-1 win, Crowns first defeat since January.
Currently it doesn’t look promising for Tyne Port and Herrenknecht,
both teams are having player problems. Tyne Port mainly with injuries
to the influential McLaren and McNerney. Herrenknecht, despite the
return of Anthony Richardson simply cannot score goals despite reasonable
possession – new players are required for Herrenknecht whereas
Tyne Port could do with their injured players at a crucial time.

Not much to say about this disgrace. We were playing against 5 men,
but simply lack the ability to score goals. Only plus point is that
Corby’s finally back in Herrenknecht colours…but after
this I doubt he’ll want to stay long….

their run.
Royal are beginning to now show why they won the Title last Season.
A total of 4 straight wins in the League still hasn’t got
them out of the Relegation Zone, but with games in hand over Slipway,
Sporting and Herrenknecht, it appears they should escape. It’s
looking bad for Tyne Port, having lost first McNerney and then McLaren,
a 2-1 defeat off Durham pushes them into the Relegation Zone. Ed
Cook fired in Tyne Ports goal, a rare appearance for him outfield.
He should have fired in a late equaliser but was thwarted by Alfie
Turner. Also welcome return for Richie Carr who last played for
Durham back in August as he was ever present in Season 1 and 2.
Herrenknecht performed brilliantly against Select, holding them
to a 1-0 lead at half time. Langan should have equalised with two
clear chances late on but failed. Both ‘keepers performed
to their highest level with Garrett making some miraculous saves
and his counterpart Davison making three crucial saves as Herrenknecht
applied some late pressure. The win leaves Select a staggering 9
points clear. They would probably have to lose nearly 4 games to
not win the League.
As most teams will already know, BHD, Fergusons and Toddy’s
have been removed from the League due to them being unable to fulfil
fixtures on several occasions. It was mutually agreed with all three
Managers that they should be removed. It must be said that the Manager’s
were all for the League and as enthusiastic as ever, but unlike
most teams, they simply did not have enough guaranteed players to
continue. Next Season is going to be very harsh on penalties for
teams not turning up. 2 points deducted and a £24 fine will
be administered. NO EXCUSES…

After last weeks abysmal performance against Bassenthwaite, the
game against Durham Pine was a chance to regain some much needed
confidence and more importantly, three points. A restructured team
due to injuries and unavailable players saw Mark Whittaker in goal,
with Ed Cook moving into midfield. We should have won comfortably,
but the physical approach adopted by Durham never gave us a chance
to get any momentum going. Late challenges on Durham’s part
stopped most of the clear opportunities we had, but the referee
seemed happy to keep the tackles flying in, some of which Vinny
Jones would have been proud of. Without the influential McLaren,
Ross was overstretched as a lone defender, although Whittaker was
disappointed with the second goal. Poor finishing from Dixon and
Scott, coupled with some good saves by Durham's keeper, kept us
out until Cook hit a consolation near the end. Three points were
there for the taking, but missed chances and soft goals have cost
us again. An improvement on last weeks shocker, but still searching
for some badly needed points.

Some would have thought that Herrenknecht had actually won the game
when they walked off the pitch after a 1-0 defeat against Select.
The match took place in an atmosphere of a game that seemed as if
it was a top of the table clash as opposed to one team attempting
to break away from Relegation and another just waiting for the Title.
True, Herrenknecht were now bolstered with the addition of ex Sporting
players, Duffy, Corby and Langan, but Select still posed a huge
threat which was apparent in the opening stages of the game. Chris
Garrett, without a doubt, Herrenknecht’s Player of the Season,
made some remarkable saves during the game to keep his team in it.
It was only late on that Herrenknecht began to show potential after
Select were penned in their own area. An early John Cairns strike
separated the two teams, but Langan, who came on as a second half
sub for Corby failed to finish off two excellent chances near the
end. Herrenknecht should have come away with a draw, but were content
with their performance. The whole team performed to their highest
ability in what one neutral said was one of the finest games seen.
The questions after the game are: when will Select mathematically
win the Title, which has been inevitable for quite a while. Will
Herrenknecht escape Relegation, which is likely with the team that
they have now…and will they be able to mount a challenge next
Season, probably, if they can keep the squad together…but
then similar things were mentioned at the back end of Season 2.

Bassenthwaite 2nd! Herrenknecht’s revival.
A 5-2 win for Select over Crown almost signalled the end of Crown’s
challenge. Back to back defeats pushed them down the table until
a 3-1 win over Slipway pushed them back into 3rd. Slipway were 2nd
but dropped down to 4th after the 3-1 defeat. Melvin Keith scored
the Slipway goal but goals from Stubbs, Wardle and Forrest made
sure Crown were still in the top half of the table, despite being
8 points behind Select. Herrenknecht showed signs of a revival with
new signings David Duff (ex Toddy’s and Sporting) and Steve
Ridley (ex-Toddy’s) joining Anthony Richardson. A superb performance
saw them race into a 4-0 lead with a well overdue hat trick from
Gordon Robson. Man of the Match Richardson scored the other. Bassenthwaite
moved into an unprecedented 2nd place with a 4-0 slaughter over
Tyne Port, who now drop into the Relegation Zone replacing Herrenknecht.

We got exactly what we deserved from this game - nothing. A terrible
performance which is difficult to accept when we know we have a
side capable of beating any team in the league. I couldnt sleep
the night after the game, it was that bad. Admittedly we looked
rusty against BHD and Royal Mail in our previous games, but against
Bassenthwaite we fell to pieces and never really looked capable
of scoring a goal, let alone winning. Definitely our worst performance
in the league since the beginning of Season 2.
It would be harsh to take anything away from Bassenthwaite, who
fully deserved the victory, but the truth is that we all had a nightmare.
The loss of key players Phil McNerney and Dave McLaren has undoubtedly
affected the balance of the side, and this performance suggests
there could be difficult times ahead, since we now find ourselves
in the bottom three. Back to the drawing board for Tyne Port, who
need to have a rethink to stop the slide towards relegation
